Are there any Pennsport people (or others) who are interested in
improving what we gots? I just read the hilarious Johnny Depp
Grilled Cheese essay at SOSBWOTC website.
South of South But West of The City. .... somthing like that.
Sorry, but didn't this used to be SOSNA or something?
They changed the name on us!
Still, its an excellent website, perhaps the best I have ever seen!
CHEGGITOUT.

If you know how to directory surf, you can read these too. If you
do not know how to directory surf but you want to learn, grab a
board and meet us in front of the boardwalk say around 10am?
Photos and Essays- Plant rescue. From 20th and Catharine to Grays Ferry and Carpenter, their temporary new home, March/April 2005. (Bonus, nice: rescue way-station, our courtyard. Bonus, not so nice: ugliness in our surroundings)
- Philadelphia Flower Show, 2005. Some of my favorite things.
- A tale of two playgrounds. Good playgrounds help to build community. Ugly ones send a message about what the neighborhood thinks about itself. Is't it time for a change at Arthur, Peirce and Stanton?
- No way to treat a National Landmark. After fifteen years of neglect and a devastating fire, mega-developer Toll Brothers is finally paying attention to the historical U. S. Naval Home site.
- The 20th and Catharine Garden. Short essay and photos on the 20th and Catharine / 1900 Webster Street community garden and woodland, which was ideally suited to become a town square.
- Ugly, smelly dumptruck, 20th and Catharine Streets. Why do suburban haulers use South Philly as their own personal parking lot? (July 2002)
- Michelle Cutner Garden, 20th and Catharine Streets. History of the reclamation of a vacant lot, 2000-2002 (construction on the garden site began August 2004).
- 30th Ward Is On the Move! A cleanup initiative sponsored by the 30th Ward Democratic Party
- GardenTenders April 2002 tour of South Philadelphia community gardens
- The Gardens of the 30th Ward (summer/fall 2001, partial. See also Garden Tenders link for some 30 Ward gardens not included on this page, esp. 2000-2200 blocks of Fitzwater)
- Former Community Garden: 2120-2124 Fitzwater Street (includes photos of the June 19, 2001 demolition and photos of the lots before their transformation to gardens)
- VARIA: Making Grilled Cheese Sandwiches the Benny & Joon Way. This is what watching too many Johnny Depp movies does to the middle-aged brain. (12/04)
- VARIA: Gretchen Worden's Creche. The late Gretchen Worden, director of the Mütter Museum, had a penchant for weird stuff. For her memorial service, the College of Physicians displayed her collections of odd creche figures, rats, cats, toilet paper, twin-like objects, and hooch bottle takeoffs. (2/05)
EDITING AND ADDING,
I am a huge fan of wireless .... not 802.11b but the cell phones! Let's say you have a Blackberry, or a Palm Treo650, or Nokia Smart Phone and you want to read headlines while you are sitting there in boring meetings.
How do you do that?
You get my code and then you can keep abreast of what's going on in the neighborhood. Plus you can learn how to make a grilled cheese sandwich using an iron. Now isn't that better than listening to what is going on in the meeting? QUOTE FROM FARGO: "You betcha!"
Why not a simple text message to everyone's cell phone two hours before the next Pennsport Civic Association meeting? Hey! Why not? Heck, its the 22nd century ....... well almost!
