Okay, so I'm not sure how it is in the rest of the city but some of the inhabitants of the little microcosm where I call home sweet home seem to have a complete disregard for parking laws and restrictions. Given that the wonderful Philadelphia Parking Authority doesn't step toe in my hood, who is to be called to ticket the offenders? I understand that there is a significant parking shortage in the city, but I wouldn't even consider moving into Philly without digs with off-street parking. My gripe isn't for lack of spaces, but the obstacle course I, and the rest of my legally parked neighbors have to traverse to get in and out of home daily.

Call your city council's office. They are likely to frankly tell you the areas where tradition has suspended parking regulations. These are really just a few streets in SP.
Most of the streets in SP are ticketed, and you can call police (911 since Philly does not yet have a 511 or non-emergency police dispatch as does other smaller cities such as Baltimore) or better still, the Parking Authority directly. Get to know the name of the ticket writers in your hood. When they realize that you are sane, they will allow you to call the PA and ask that they be made aware of gross violations such as handicapped ramp blocking, sidewalk parking on wide enough streets, and long double parks. Also, the owner of the property that is the site of the infraction is key to getting action taken. For example, the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church on Fitz and Grays Ferry used to just park all up and down the Naval Home sidewalks, ruining the concrete, and blocking the sidewalks for pedestrians. Now Toll repoured the sidewalk, put out planters that can't be moved without a forklift, and had the PA do repeated ticketing. After some polite but firm discussions with the church, it is understood that people who park there will not get a break from the PA and will not be able to call anyone in the city to have the tickets forgiven. Traditions can be changed. Even in SP after a bit of work. |

Don't bother calling City council. Who do you think they will respond to:
the lone caller who wants ticketing and who probably just moved into S. Philly or the whole block that calls including the comitteeman |

The illegal parking in South Philly is horrible and the parking authority is a joke. Of course, it's also a joke that residents just say "this is south philly and that's the way it is". If more South Philly people had more self respect for their community maybe the rest of the city would respect them. It's also crazy that even an elected leader won't help because some low-rent, do-nothing political relic (committee person--what the hell do they do anyway?) will complain if the law is enforced.
I've been looking to buy a house in South Philly but the more I see of the parking issue, the less likely I am to purchase. Exhale |

Traffic and parking laws apply in South Philadelphia too, and it's about time it was aggressively enforced. Ticket and tow them!
