I want ed so badly to post in this thread because I have so many good memories of this area. My grandparents had a house on this block and my family went there often for dinner. My grandmother had her kitchen remodeled, but still cooked all the meals in the basement on a huge six-burner stove from the thirties. All meals were eaten down there as well, the whole family gathered around two tables. I think my last meal there was Christmas Eve, 1981.
I still have an elderly cousin (actually my mom's third cousin) who still lives on that block. He is made of tougher stuff than I, however, because that neighborhood is not pleasant. I suppose it's not the absolute worst, either, but it's close. If my choice were between 16th and Reed, and 9th and Tasker, I'd definitely pick 9/T.
Oddly enough, my grandparents house was recently purchased. I drove by one day to see it being gutted for a rehab, so I stopped, and the owner let me in to take some pictures. A very bittersweet occasion. I hope he does well with this property, and I hope it can help turn the neighborhood around, but it has a long way to go.
