Question South Street Blues

Anyone know what's going on there? I've seen people in and out a few times over the past couple of weeks. Looks like they're putting some work into the place. I noticed a new-ish looking storefront right around 23rd and South, with paper on the windows. Just curious as to what new and exciting places we're gong to have in the neighborhood!

Default ..and South Valley?

Yes.. I just passed by there today and I did notice that newish/in-progress looking storefront.. I've been wondering what's on the horizon for the area as well -- I remember a thread mentioning developments on 22nd street and was looking for it but couldn't find it..

Also -- besides new places.. I've been wondering about what seems to be an old place.. On either 16th or 15th and Fitzwater or Bainbridge there is what seems to be a tavern with the sign "South Valley".. Has anyone been here? I think ljlong also posted earlier asking about a restaurant or bar for sale at Catharine and gray's ferry?..

Yes.. thanks for starting this thread -- hopefully someone on the board has the scoop[s]..

South Valley is a bar, @ 15th & Kater. It's very small, with a very local crowd. Not the Bob & Barbara's crowd, stictly old-neighborhood guys.

I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that a coffeeshop was opening up in the South Street Blues location.

Also, as far as 22nd Street goes, the Sidecar Bar and Grille will be opening in the former location of Victor's Tavern (22nd and Christian) this October. I understand that the owner of the Sidecar is in a competition with the gentleman who is opening a Turkish restaurant at 22nd and Montrose as to who will open first. Needless to say, I'm very excited to see some life breathed into this corner of SWCC. At this stage, I say the more commercial space the better.

Yeah, they've been moving slowly on the South Street Blues spot, for maybe a couple of months now. If you were really curious about it, you should check in with Richard Moore at Century 21 (2216 South St) - I believe he was listed as the rental contact.

The new (redone) storefront at 23rd and South is an expansion of the rug store.

Anyone have a lead on the new construction between the rug store and the new event planning place?

Default South Valley

I was working on a show at The Jamaican Jerk Hut and South Valley is right behind it. I was there for about five nights and was able to oserve the crowd at this bar. They are very, um, interesting. I don't think I'd be comfortable hanging with them.

Yes, that's one way to put it. I've been a few times, but always with a buddy who has lived in the neighborhood his entire life (50 some years).

Phil Sumpter, a local artist specializing in black cowboys, has some murals painted on the walls of the South Valley; his studio is down on Hicks Street. The South Valley exterior had a brief drive-by cameo in the movie "Blowout" with John Travolta.

Love the thread! Wish I knew more, but the hot word is that the large orange bar at Catharine and Grays Ferry is under agreement with a new owner. The Church is selling it to a person who has a view of it as an upscale pub.

J & B Dix sold to someone who knows someone on the Board of SOSNA. That closing just occured. The deal is done. Look for renovation any day now on the site, probably starting with the roof.

I'm also very curious about the old South St. Blues. SOSNA members, didn't these guys apply for community support? What are they doing?
