I've been looking to buy a house in Philly and I have considered Pennsport because of it's proximity to alot of stores, 95 and the colonial architecture. It's a little cheaper than Graduate hospital and seems safer/cleaner than Grays Ferry/ the area south of Grad hospital. Are there any areas to stay away from or anything to look out for?
Thanks |

Stay on Moyamensing Ave or east of that and you'll be fine. I live there now, it's a nice area. Very little crime, lots of families. I'm moving west to 11th & Pierce in a couple months though because there's more stores, restaurants, and activity there. Also it's an Italian neighborhood (I'm Italian, Pennsport's mostly Irish). Pennsport doesn't really have many stores or restaurants. Plenty of bars though. The stores on Columbus Blvd are very close but you'll probably drive there anyway. I would say Pennsport's the most "upscale" neighborhood below Washington Ave, east of Broad. It's very residential though, and being a single guy, not my cup of tea. But there's nothing wrong with it.

Pennsport is just starting to TAKE OFF! Go visit Caffe Carmen and see what the neighborhood is coming to. Its at the corner of Emily and Moyamensing Streets around three blocks above Snyder and Moyamensing. Say hello to Jo and try her homemade gelati and Italian sandwiches.

Here's my take on Philadelphia politics. Johnny Doc will rise high. John Dougherty is President of the Pennsport Civic Association, He is also Chairman of the Redevelopment Authority and President of the Electricians' Local IBEW. He is chairman of the Democratic Party.
Its time for a change from all of the lawyers and politicians stealing big time. Its time for the working guys to gain control of the city. That is why there is great future in Pennsport. Who agrees, who disagrees? Oh, sorry, here's Caffe Carmen! Joel .. ![]() ..

But I'm wondering if some people are starting to get greedy. Last year, a 3-bed, 2-bath, house w/garage on Two Street that I was interested in making an offer on ultimately was purchased by someone else for 297K. Now I've learned that this very same house, exactly one year later, is back on the market, this time for 439K. Are properties really appreciating that fast? |

Revitalizing Pennsport
Yes there are properties on market where the residents are trying to cash in. How can one tell? Go to the BRTweb or www.Hallwatch.Org and one sees that the property has been in the same hands since 1965. Perhaps, its never been updated or remodeled either. No matter. Its human nature. I sure wish I owned two or three houses and could sell an extra one or two, but I don't. And pitching a tent in Fairmount Park isn't the adventure it used to be. In fact its another adventure! ABOUT PENNSPORT I am working on a program to revitalize the business district. What we envision are a series of banners lining Washington Avenue and lining Snyder avenue, perhaps hundreds of banners, each with a business sponsor and all directing visitors to the Pennsport District website, and free web pages for every business Don't even go there. Its not working yet. In fact I had to spray paint the exact temporary location of the proposal as this is in the early development stages. The idea is to waylay people who are on their way to Famous Dave's or anywhere else and create an awareness about businesses in Pennsport. There will be money-off coupons, etc. There will be maps and shops by location, type, etc. By the way, this is not a business event here. This is a free, cost-plus, grass roots activity designed by Joely (me!) for a friendly, neighborhood win-win. I am not a computer professional but I know enough to design effective backgrounds and I know enough about providing information! Your feedback is appreciated! Joely .. ![]() ..

I recently bought a place around the 400 block of Dickinson. So far, I really like the neighborhood. I can definitey say that I'm situated right on the edge of the 'already-established' portion of Pennsport and the area being developed (read:5th st.). You can definitely get more for your money in Pennsport than you can in Graduate Hosputal, and all signs I see point towards the area continuing to gentrify. All things considered, Pennsport's worked out really well for me--it's a good bet.
Now, if Mt. Sinai Hospital would just get developed/overhauled/etc... :-) |

We bought our house in March and we absolutely love the neighborhood. Have not had a single problem. Be prepared for a more laid-back old-school-family neighborhood if you are considering it.
Anyone concerned about the property that Harrah's Corp acquired at Reed and Columbus? After reading the recent report on possible site locations I truly believe that this will be a finalist for the slot parlor. |
