Question increased crime?

A friend of mine is concerned about a recent increase in muggings in Queen Village, and crime in general, in Philly. I think Philly is pretty safe. What do you guys think? Any scoop on the muggings in Queen Village?

I heard there were a few muggings via my wife via the qvna.org site. Mostly kids on bikes with guns up near society hill and also down near front and catherine. Do you have more info?

It seems that every few years or so the media tries to scare people with stories about increased crime. I wouldn't be surprised that there is increased crime. However, much of it seems to be happening far away from the neighborhoods msot people on Phillyblog live in. I'm more interesting in seeing a breakdown by neighborhood and seeing whether crime is on the increase in so-and-so neighborhood.

As for the muggings in QV, it seems like every few years you have some mugging spree there. I don't know why. A few years back there was some guy who would terrorize store owners. One storeowner in the South Street area was beaten up and so terrorized that she moved the store to Narberth.

Last night around 9:30 I was walking back to my apartment and saw a couple get mugged at gunpoint at 5th and Catharine by a kid riding a bike. I ran over to them while the biker took off west down Catharine to see if they were ok. They were visibly shaken but unharmed, I then went back to my apartment to call and report it as I did not have my cellphone with me.

This call was a rather frustrating experience...The person answering 911 at first didn't understand that I was not the one who had been robbed. After I convinced her that I had been a witness and not a victim, she then didn't know where to store the information in the computer database as the couple had not called in to report it at this point. So I gave a description of what happened and left my name and number but have no idea if it was properly recorded; no one called today to follow up. bang wall

That being said, I did notice that tonight there has been an increase of police officers on bicycles in the neighborhood so it would appear that there has been an active response to the uptick in muggings.

Same deal in Fairmount - kids on bikes with guns. Sometimes quite young, like maybe even pre-teen. It's been pretty bad up here for the last 5-6 weeks or so.

And what's with these gangs of kids riding arounnd the city on mini-bicycles?? I guess the mini-bikes are easier to maneuver and serve as good get away vehicles. I persaonlly am sick of these mini-bike kids since many of them ride purposely fast and seem to deliberately try to be annoying.
