Default When Green Goes Too Far...

So, how bout that green fest at 2nd and south. Learned a lot today.

Got to hear some band preach about how certain businesses nearby weren't "green". Meanwhile, I asked the guitarist to see his pick. It was a 'jack daniels' pick made in china for peavey. Something tells me its not quite copasetic with the green police. Neither was his sweatshop made squier stratocaster.

Along citibank, boxes of polyethylene tarp boxes were laying around from all of the vendors who bought vendor tents, only to throw them away after the event. Guess it didn't pay to go green and buy a canvas tarp-even for the vendor who was showing the waste created by using plastic bags.

There was even a 'green' accountant there. What makes a green accountant, you ask? He uses recycled paper in his printer and does accounting for green businesses.

There are even green energy drinks these days, which contain citric acid, known to carry heavy metals and chloride and bacterial endotoxins to products we use everyday. Real green.

Overall, I find about half of this crap to be a scam.

And the person who was selling the "beat cancer in a box" kit can suck my derrière...that's lower than low. I could see selling supplements during chemo, but to market a box of tapes and diet plan as a solution is just wrong. The "are toxins in your muscles?" massage station was equally scamilicious.

and - as someone who focuses on marketing and the PR spin - i can only imagine the ping of sadness the organizers must have felt when watching Action News at 6pm and having the anchor do a read about their event on South Street over b-roll of images from the Farmer's Market at the Shambles (which wasn't part of the event) - they did show a clip of a recycle sign however

But no shot of the RECYCLE BAG MAN ... that dude was creepy! Any other location in Center City, and he would have been one of those "reasons to cross the street to avoid the nut" moments...

However - i DID love the fact that Paul Green School of Rock kids started off the morning (following some exhausting yoga performance) by performing a live, blasting cover of DEAD KENNEDYS!! I heard several of the Granola-heads were freaking out and demanding them to turn it down!

Ah, that was green indeed

Green has become just another marketing gimmick, unfortunately.

Thank you, Alesis. Excellent post. The above quote was particularly important to me since I watched a friend of mine on Long Island die unnecessarily from an originally dx'd Stage 1 breast tumor because some quack told her that traditional cancer treatment is big money business and that the medical establishment didn't want to see a cure for cancer that would put them out of business. She was made to believe that her cancer could be cured by ridding her body of stored toxins. It took her three years to die an awful death and leave her 10yo DD behind.

I realize we're all born with free will, but still . . . .

You can't let yourself become disillusioned with the idea of living an environmentally responsible lifestyle just because there are a ton of annoying people yapping about it.

Reminds me of a great quote from some sci-fi author. When asked if he thought 90% of current science-fiction was crap he answered, "Of course it is. 90% of everything is crap."

There are stores out there selling many "green" items. Some items are good ideas, others are just things to make you *feel* more environmentally responsible. Much of it has become big business. Isn't it best to be "green" by not consuming as much. So selling "green" items is a little contradictory at times, yes?
