Green is the new DotCom. and before that Grunge of the 90s and Punk in the 80s and Disco in the 70s and Hippies in the 60s....
Money follows the trends, since 1950.

Justice Stewart once remarked about obscenity, "I know what it is when I see it." The same can be applied to "green" (not that obscenity and "green" are in the same sphere but please follow my point). You don't need someone to label it "green". It doesn't take a rocket scientist to follow the plastic, "gassed-n-greened" vegetables from Mexico (unless you live near to Mexico...), etc to understand how you are impacting the environment. Know where you live and shop accordingly (I lived on the US/Mexico border and got great produce...avacados you would die for...but not expecting the same luxuries here. That said, the tomatoes here are delicious and you can't get sweet corn to save your life in southern california!). Just look at the product your buying and make your choice.

If you want to see more clean SEPTA buses, get on between 4AM and 5AM....

I love it! Tell more!
I have my toy shop in Northern Liberties and I get some questions from time to time about how "green" we are. I personally believe that we can all do a little adding to a lot. For example, we do a lot of shipping and we use only corn starch packing peanuts which disolve in water. We offer paper bags and we offer plastic bags. The plastic bags are degradable when exposed to water and sunlight, I buy them in boxes of 1000 which is small and a fraction the size of buying multi sized paper bags - reducing box sizes allows more to be packed on a truck and reduces the footprint overall. Paper bags are potentially a worse offender than these platic ones I buy. The concept of "Green" is going to be a marketing boon to many companies - we are already seeing this on tv. I know it's on people minds and it should be, but there is now a judgemental aspect to this which is a bit frustrating. ![]() |

Quote:
It gets hard to separate the BS from the real message: If we each do a little, a lot gets done. Every culture and society throughout history has had to deal with its waste issues and some civilizations have fallen as a result. But, when you have people screaming and talking so condescendingly to one another it just drowns out the real issues and turns people off or polarizes one side against the other. This is why I don't pay attention to Fox News and Air America. I just can't stand the arrogance on each side and the contempt they each project towards one another. |
