Default Thoughts on Civic Associations....

Can anyone chime in on how to start a civic associations.
Am not getting into details but am not satisfy with the local one. But I have come to realize they are somewhat useful....
What are the pros and cons of such assoc. Also can part of the neighborhood alliance another local neighborhood's civic assoc...

Happy Friday all!

That's why I hate them. Too few people with too much control-which in the case of HEC is one person.

Happy Friday all!
You can create alliances. with other civic ass.. Our local civic ass. get together on certain issues and they are called the neighorhood alliance for certain projects and the south street alliance when it involves liquor licenses.

Well tell me about it. The demographics of this area has indeed change and change for them is a foreign word. I don't feel like our HOA has to ask for handouts when we have issues that they ignore or deem unimportant. For example, I sent them an email about what our crimes stats are I received a reply 3 months later and didn't answer my question. So now we go the south st precinct meetings every month.

Well guess what am calling city hall, local representatives and seek to solve our own issues. And when we do they feel left out of the party!? Too bad. I also feel like there's a bad culture of handouts, "you give me this, I give you that".

Well, I think you solved more problems in hawthorne than HEC ever did, as seen from your posts. You could start your own association, and the politicians would probably like it since you know who wouldn't be the only show in town.

I just looked at their website, which finally isn't the ramblings of a madman. Why are they doing an article on FDR Park? That has about as much to do with Hawthorne as rittenhouse square!

The FDR Park has to do with the new park that's going to be oversaw by the FDR Park commission that is within Hawthorne, and originally intended to be part of the HOA development. There's been fighting for the park from many respective parties, however, some seem more inclined to claim/demand ownership than others. Like most things, it's a pissing match. So, while FDR Park is nowhere close to Hawthorne technically, it soon will be, by 2010 I believe.

Cheers,
So sayeth RuggerAl

1. Never know RuggerAl spoke normalese. I'm a bit awestruck.
2.Had no idea FDR had their own park commission. Are they under fairmount park's authority or are they a completely seperate entity?

1. I've been out of the loop on Phillyblog for too long, speaking in that broken 3rd person dialect takes a lot of focus and energy I haven't gathered back up yet.

2. Over sight on my part, it's not FDR, it's Fairmount, because that's both accurate and makes much more sense. The bit on their website about FDR Park is just free publicity I assume.

The pros of a civic association are the people who can define a clear mission for their organization, and who can motivate the larger community to buy into that mission and contribute energy and resources to fulfilling that mission.
The cons of a civic association are people who band together to pursue short-term, short-sighted, and limited-self-interest goals without a clear mission, and who suck energy and resources from their own community. One of the surest indicators that there are cons in the civic association is the abundance of short tempers at the civic association meetings...

YOU are the civic assn. It takes a lot of dedication by you and your neighbors. If you want to see one in action drop by a meeting one night in Sept. EPX. They have town watch, clean & green, zoning. Now on the other hand, What do you want out of a civic assn.?????

That's a good question? Am not so sure. Why are they needed when we have elected officials who are supposed to represent us....
Furthermore, I just feel that HEC does not take action to concerns that I bring to their attention. And when I do take action on our own concerns they get upset that somebody took action without their consent. It seems that they have their OWN agenda and my nabe are left out of it completely.
What is EPX?
