We've gone down there 3 nights in a row, trying to get a feel for the area before we go to see a place today. That way, we'll have a better idea of noise, etc.
It seems pretty quiet, relatively speaking. The area at the intersection near Little Fish, near where the apt. is, did seem to have some people that seemed to be going somewhere- some kind of nighttime hangout maybe, and I don't think they were headed to one of the restaurants, but they weren't rowdy or anything. If we make this move, it'll be vastly different from where we are now, in "no man's land." Technically part of 3 neighborhoods, but not really connected to any. It's pretty quiet, except for loud helicopters and leaf-blowers in the mornings, but one can feel disconnected from the rest of the city.

Do people abuse the welfare system in any society that provides it? Duh. Are drugs and intermittent violent crime a problem amongst a certain percentage of the people living in or hanging out at the RCA complex? Duh. I’m not cheerleading for drug dealers, here. But just as I would wager that you are not quite as big of an *sshole as you seem on this forum, if you bothered to shut your hole long enough to meet some of the folks that live at RCA, you’d find that many of them are decent people, with jobs, who hate the drug activity and violence in their midst. It’s not liberal white guilt that moves me to say that it’s just experience.

I've lived just up the street from 6th/Catharine for a couple of years and I'd say it's pretty safe and mostly friendly - you don't have to stay in once the sun goes down, just pay attention to your surroundings like any sensible adult would.
It's a great area with easy access to many of the things that make Philly a pretty great city to live in - restaurants, bars, markets, parks. It's a great area and pretty much everything you could need or want is a walk away. This was my first post, so, hello to everyone. Oh and if you're going to get on your high horse about being able to pronounce "Nitzsche" you should probably check your spelling first - Nietzsche. First vowel long "e," second schwa "e." |

I was going to say something about the spelling, but thought he might have been talking about Jack Nitzsche, the famous arranger and composer who worked with Neil Young on Harvest. He was always such a pain in the ass going on and on about the death of God. Blah, blah, blah.

Thanks. I think he's trying to say black people commit crimes because their blaming white people for their problems has resulted in a distorted morality. Ressentiment - also misspelled - is the French word assigned to this theory. Sorry, I'm a bit of a dork and I was forced to study this crap in the past and it seems it stuck. (Please god don't let this perpetuate the racial/crime nonsense I feel starting on yet another thread here. The nice lady just wanted to know what people think of the 'hood, nothing more.) Move here, you can walk to Sarcones and Los Taquitos del Pueblo. |

The funny thing is that, to some extent, and misspellings aside, he has a point about certain behaviors, but the erroneous assumptions and ranting generalizations instantly deflates that point. Oh well.

Sure he has a point, and I'm sure it's applies in many instances. I think we can bitch about mis-directed aggression or societal failures forever and not get anywhere or we can take a step back, open up and think things through. We need a better schools & welfare programs AND we need people to take responsibility for themselves. Both sides of an argument usually have something worthwhile to add. It doesn't have to be either-or.
