I walk around all of the time, take the buses, walk back and forth to the subway and use that, do my shopping--and feel safe. One of the reasons is that there are people out most of the time. And don't be afraid of South St., no matter what some fools try to tell you. There is safety in that sort of crowd, believe it or not.
