To the woman whose big, white, unleashed dog jumped on a little boy at Weccacoe Playground on Saturday morning, and who didn't immediately put a leash on hound: The dog needs to be on a leash. It's the law. If you let your dog bound around the neighborhood without a leash, especially around children in the park, someone might call the police. (The nuisance and danger posed to children apparently isn't reason enough to place a leash on the dog.) There's a dog run two blocks away.
To the woman riding her bike on a Queen Village sidewalk Saturday morning: Sidewalks are for pedestrians and for children under age 12 on bicycles. Philadelphia law, while unenforced in this regard, prohibits adults from riding bicycles on the sidewalk. Common courtesy also dictates pedestrians, especially small or otherwise vulnerable ones, have the right of way over bicycles on a sidewalk. Your irritated expression notwithstanding, it wasn't necessary for me to shoo my two-year-old out of your way. To the person who left dog poop in our flower garden: Kindly leave a note with your home address. (How's that for a QV classic? Unleashed dog in Weccacoe, cyclist on sidewalk, dog crap in garden.) Uh, I was going to post a pictorial essay of a guy letting his doge poop in someone's bricked in mulched area while I was walking back from the riverview(go speedracer!). You don't live on front street do you?
I've been bumping/nudging bicyclists lately. They shouldn't be on the sidewalk, and no one in the world can say its dangerous bicycling in QV-otherwise they really shouldn't be riding a bike, period. Motorcycles are ok on the sidewalk as long as they are are properly registered and insured, and the driver is properly licensed. Keeps number one son on his toes. I saw a motorcycle appear out of thin air Friday night at the David Copperfield show...it was loud since I was in the front row. Is a Harley legal if it magically appears? This crap always boggles my mind. Oh, and a duck peed on me. Twice. Quote:

My passive-aggressive tactic is to allow my 3 or 4 dogs (4 if the foster is home) the full width of the sidewalk if a bicyclist is heading towards us. They are then forced into the street, where they belong for at least a little bit.
Plus my littlest dog is terrified of bicycles, and I won't have her be terrified by anyone. The boydog will eat their face off. And yes, they are always on leash except in designated areas. In case you wondered. |

This is by far one of my biggest pet peaves. The topic never gets old with me. What's worse is that when I point out to these idiots on the sidewalk that they're breaking the law and to get off the sidewalk, they yell and swear at ME! Talk about QoL issue.
I was going to call 3rd District and ask why they don't do more about it because it's so unnerving to have some a$$ come barrelling down the walk behind you and you have to move. It takes one kid or dog to run out of a house and someone's going to be a goner. These are small streets and if someone is afraid to ride their bike on 10th street then they should rethink the bike all together. The more people call out the fact that these people (I'd say 99% it's men between 20 and 40) are breaking the law, maybe we'll see a change. I think some people don't know better while many just don't care. My favorite is also seeing people ride their bikes on the sidewalk down 11th where there's a bike lane. This was a topic in CC forum last year and there were actually people saying that they do it all the time and will continue to do it. Makes me want to run around with a chainsaw. |

The dog poop is what gets to me. I mean - how inconsiderate do you have to be to leave your dog's crap for someone else to clean up.
I went to get the newspaper Friday morning and found dog poop on the sidewalk in front of my house. Unfortunately, I forgot about it for the rest of the day (I generally leave through the back door to get to the garage) so I spent Saturday morning cleaning smeared dog poop from the sidewalk. Lovely. |
