Having been to San Francisco's answer to the Reading Terminal Market -- they don't really have an Italian Market analogue -- I second this observation.
Then again, speaking generally, when I was in San Francisco, I had this vague sensation of having left the United States and entered Fantasyland. So given that the whole place is unreal, it perhaps should come as no surprise that we have the better honest-to-God public markets.
