madonna is american btw - her parents were both americans. her father was italian-american (his parents from italy), but her mother was french canadian. dean martin, on the other hand, at least had a parent from italy.

First off, I take issue with the use of the word kitsch, thereby implying that dean martin or sinatra are low quality crap. That's patently false. second, ninth st market isn't Italian anyways so there isn't any more appropriate music to play than Italian American music. That type of music was also pretty populat in Italy itself.

I must second El's nominations here. I have that Italian Cafe CD, and it is really great, and need to get the others. Nothing wrong with Sinatra and Dino, just need to mix it up a bit. I found it! :-)

Nipsey, a person can obtain Italian citizenship if they're the great-great-grandchild of a person born in Italy, so who knows? Maybe Ms. Ciccone is officially Italian, too.

you can take all the issue you like. this music does "appeal to popular or lowbrow taste" per the defintion. regarding the second half of the definition ("is often of poor quality") we could debate the quality or we can reasonably determine that the definition doesn't dictate that it must be of poor quality.

further, I walk around south philadelphia and hear sinatra, martin, and the godfather theme blaring from various windows quite a bit more than is warranted and i find it silly, cliched, stereotypical, repetitive, and slightly embarrassing.

however, we all know what they say about opinions....and now we got two on this board!
