Default Sewer/Water laterals

Ack!

I just received a notice from the city that my sewer and water laterals are defective, and that I need to start getting them fixed within 10 days. Not much time! Does anyone have a plumber they can recommend who specializes in this work? Thanks!

I don't know if the PWD still has it, but there was a plan were you could get an interest free loan to fix the defects, but you had to pick from a list of contractors who agreed to the price. Not all plumbers were on the list.

I had two laterals, two stacks & vents, two traps, etc and the cement all done under the program with a 5 year no interest loan.

I took a look at that Water Dept. program, but you have to be living in the house to qualify. This house is currently being rented out.

OH,
If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost for all of that work? How many stories are the stacks?

Two curb traps and the stacks (vents) to the curb, two complete laterals from house to curb, one drain and trap in driveway, water supply replaced and cement for the entire driveway and 3 sidewalk blocks and the small curb ramp replaced. The driveway is over one car lenth.

It was about $5000 in 2000 or 2001.

Another plumber's estimate was higher and he wasn't on the city's approved list.

The city had a set rate for each item (it was like picking from a menu), each trap was a certain amount, each foot of pipe was a certain amount, square foot of cement, etc.

Current rates from the city's home repair programs follow. You'd probably be hard pressed to get these prices privately from any decent plumber, but they're a good starting point to figure out what it's going to cost you.

Replace Main Drain, Basement to Curb (including permit, excavation, backfill, concrete, vent, cover & curb trap): $1,780.

Replace Main Drain, Basement to Main: $3,040.

Add'l for house to curb > 8 ft or house to main > 16 ft: $88 / ft

Add'l for depth > 12 ft: $200 / ft

Replace Water Service, House to Curb (including excavation, backfill, concrete, shut off valves before & after meter. Not including permits - go figure): $910.

Replace Water Service, Curb to Main: $1,050.

Add'l for house to curb > 8 ft or house to main > 16 ft: $65 / ft

Replace Vent Stack, Cast Iron (includes removal of old stack, installation of all fittings, bends and clean out): $36 / ft

Replace Vent Stack, PVC: $20 / ft
