actually, you should care about vinyl siding. The production of vinyl siding is the number 2 use of plastics. it is a nasty process, tons of toxins and just flat out a bad material. When you really study the embodied energy of the stuff, it is wasteful and irresponsible choice. There are plenty of sustainable options and anybody with any sensibility about the world we inhabit should really try and find other solutions other than vinyl.

Under "Requirements for both New Construction and Alterations" it reads:
"(.3) Exterior security grills are not permitted on windows and doors." I've lived in this neighborhood for around 10 years and I love it, but we all know there's a crime problem. It wasn't all that long ago that there was a double homicide not 50 feet from my house (5th & Montrose) - and yet... How on earth can it be legal for the city to say how I can or can not secure my home if they're unable to provide me with a safe environment? I have bars on my first floor windows, and a pretty sturdy storm door. I'm not sure if my door classifies as a security grill, but I'm sure what I have on my windows does. Does this mean that if I ever want to make changes to the outside of my home that I have to take the bars down? That's absolutely insane. Improving my home's appearance is good for the whole block - penalizing me for that is shameful. We need to get organized. Print out petition letters, take them around to your neighbors, tell them why you oppose this ridiculous legislation. Call Councilman DiCicco's office - make sure he knows how you feel - while you're at it call QVNA and do the same. If anyone wants to work on this with me feel free to drop me an email - darrellhyde@gmail.com. D. |

Oh, come on. 2/3 of food choices in america are wasteful because of their packaging, 92% of transportation in america is wasteful because its inefficient, and we spend twice as much on healthcare while being ranked 36th globally. If you want a Sierra Club debate, go elsewhere. This is a conversation about a few neighbors controlling everything from security bars to door colors because they have a penchant for red brick in a community that is a majority of modern structures and 70's brick-as in the 1970's.
Faux history and faux historical connotations may be a great combination for some neighborhood neophytes, but their reasoning is equivalent to those who try to bring up an environmental debate within a conversation about legislation regarding a nimby district. Quote:

Well, I guess I can sympathize with people not wanting historic old homes that can be saved torn down, and trying to keep developers from coming in and building ugly crap with cheap materials in order to make more profit, but the regulations do seem a bit much.
Have to agree with the other poster about the security bars. Who is going to tell people who don't feel safe that they can't put bars on their 1st floor windows or door?? On the other hand, these regs are no where near as restrictive as what people with homes on the historic register have to go through. I feel sorry for those folks because for them new front light = extremely expensive, hand-crafted replica of 1700's whale oil lamp that has to be installed with square head nails and rope.

![]() When do we get raw sewage thrown from our chamber pots out windows into the streets just like the old times? Ah, the good old days! The authentic sights and smells of a bygone era.

Although your post is satirical, I wonder how far from the truth it actually is. They wish to regulate any change to the facade, and as wacky as these %&#$ are, I wouldn't be surprised if the day came when they began questioning any new vent that protrudes from the facade. A three month process involving the planning commission to get a new dryer vent-I can see it already.
