I found Maoz's fries are wildly inconsistent; sometimes crispy, golden and wonderful; other times limp and leaden.

(Though to be honest, I haven't eaten at Maoz for a while, ever since I saw that they let people go back to the salad/sauce bar, and use the serving spoons to spread sauce on their half-eaten falafel. That grossed me out.)

My two cents - my wife and I both love SOS, as far as neighborhood cheesesteaks go. I get so disheartned when I see that weekend line out the door at Jim's and only a few folks on line at SOS.
That said, my fave is still D'alessandro's, but I'd rather walk 5 minutes than drive 20 for a steak.

That sh*t pisses me off to no end. I told a hipster kid the other day that I could direct him to an all you can eat salad bar if he so desired.

The kids will take one bite, refill their pita. Another bite, refill the pita. Rinse and repeat over and over.

In regards to SOS, I am also amazed that people will sit in line for a half an hour when an equivalently priced steak is just down the block. Everyone's got their own opinion of what is a great tasting steak, but I don't think anyone can say that SOS is inferior to Jims.

Well, dag. Now I guess I gotta try me some SoS.

I had a steak at Jim's when I first moved here and wasn't overly impressed. then again, I'm really more of a roast pork person, I've discovered.

I've yet to make it to SOS, but will venture in soon. All I can say about Jim's it that it is the worst steak ever. Any corner pizza joint serves a better steak. I dont know how Jim's got the tourist-cult following, but I dont know any true philadelphian that would go to Jims for a steak. I think the one at the Roosevelt Mall is even worse than South St.

Several spots on the food network.

I am a huge fan of SOS. I go to school 3hrs away from the city, and cannot wait to go home and have a REAL cheesesteak with provolone fried onions and mushrooms.

Like I said .. always seems closed to me.
I was on South St tonight and all this SOS talk had me really psyched for one tonight. 8:30-9:00 monday night and they were closed. Went to Jim's instead. meh ...

OTH I was there when our new Chief of Police stopped in for a steak. They parked Number One in a no stopping zone. A perk or of the position or just in case he needs to get out fast for an emergency frisking? I'm not gonna argue unless he starts butting in line at the ipod store.

This is my second accidental Philly brass sighting. I ran into Michael Nutter in the mens room of the 4 seasons in December. In case you were wondering.... we both have narrow stances.

During the mayoral 'race' I frequently saw Mr. Nutter walking east on Chestnut around 8:15 as I made my west to the office. Always by himself, always walking very quickly. I was impressed by the lack of entourage, but his speed didn't exactly invite people to stop and chat.
Sorry to take this thread OT. Visit SOS!
