Sad to see them go, but there is a reason. The owners divorced and Peter left. Wife (Jennifer?) and Jonathan are forming a new partnership, closing up that location and re-opening under something new on or around Chestnut Street. It has nothing to do with the "failings of South Street, oh my!"

Very interesting thread. I have been thinking very hard at opening a store in this area - 3rd/4th between Bainbridge and South or just a little below Bainbridge.
We have been looking in vacant windows thinking about which space would best fit our needs, asking local business owners questions, etc. The area seems to be ok for my business but I could be wrong. South Street itself reminds of East 8th Street back in NYC where kids go to buy clothing to shock their parents with. But, on the otherhand, on the side streets I see more community type businesses which have nothing to do with tourist traps and cheapy fashion stuff. It is kind of a great mix - tourist traps with the real neighborhood stuff on the side streets. Do you know how rare that is? I could be out of my mind to open a shop there. Any feedback would be appreciated. We are ToysNYC.com |

While I don't have a child young enough for toys, I have nephews, and would appreciate a toy store in the area, but that is only one person.

I think 4th street would be a good fit for you.

Is that the shop on Pine about a half mile up? We've seen the windows after closing time and it looks neat.
We have a very different slant and type of business. Very different. Lots of history, wildlife and nature, interactive educational toys and collectibles going up to serious military miniatures. It would be really neat to try it out here. See, I used to come to Philly every weekend when I was 18 - had an aunt and uncle on 8th and Pine. A good number of the businesses I used to frequent and see are still alive and well 14 years later. I really like that and it gives me some bit of hope that what I offer would have some impact and longevity. |

It's on the 1000 block of Pine. Happily Ever After, I think.

After looking at your site more, toysnyc, I really think that you would fit on 4th street perfectly. Your toys and art prints would be a perfect addition near jinxed, which sells collectable toys, books, and fine art.

I've gotten some encouraging emails too since I posted on this thread - apparently there's a little void in my specialty. So, we'll see what materializes. |
