Oh and new trees..but that's not to November, as I've been told.
Any reason why November? Is this a botany thing or a city thing?

Botany.

Supposedly, however, they have pushed it up to late september/early october for some reason.

The trees are mostly planted, and all the new traffic lights are now working. There still are some St. corners to be worked on, but I can see them starting the St. repaving very soon. Any word on when that's going to start? I didn't see any recent updates on the southst.com for mernchants website.

Well the street is stripped...

http://www.southstreet.com/index.php...id=6&Itemid=16

Bold means it's done:

-Replace all traffic signals and control boxes

-Replace all sidewalks with concrete tinted light gray

-Handicap corner ramps highlighted with darker gray

-Replace all pedestrian lights

-Install bike racks

-Reposition granite curbs to correct height

Install approximately 10 trees per block (dependant upon utility placement)

-Mill tar on South Street and repave...

We have bike racks in front of our place, but we're annoyed that they took down a tree of ours that my husband had planted, and it wasn't replaced. Booo!

can someone shine light on just what the buried pipes next to each tree are for? are they installing electrical outlets at each tree - for possible tree lightings?

just wondering ...

also - if you've missed it, the red stone padding has been put in place around the trees west of 8th... not terrible, but this strip has its share of red hues now, that's for sure!

I think it's a shame and don't understand why they removed so many nice old shade trees form South Street. What's the improvement with this whole project? There was a street with a lovely arch of old trees with twinkling lights. They ripped all that out, spent a summer digging up the street and blocking sidewalks, and now there are twiggy trees (are they alive?) covered with rubbery red mats at the base. I don't know if that qualifies as adequate replacement of old trees.

From those that I've spoken to (business owners on 300 block of South), those trees were doing major damage to the sidewalks and the foundations of some of the properties - and over the past few years (thanks to nature, buses and trucks) they had grown dangerously lopsided.

I know a few times that branches had come crashing down on the street outside Copa...

That and the massive work that's been done on the sidewalks would have been nearly impossible to do by working around the trees; also the healthier trees probably would have suffered some real damage with all of the jackhammering that's gone on in the streets and sidewalks.
