Nothing really matters...the fact they are "redoing" South Street is worthless. There is a huge investment that won't be sustained. If the city wants this to be a draw (regardelss of the city wants -it is), then there should be constant maintenance. There is SO much trash and the likes each and every day, the street will look terrible sooner then later. At the end of the day though, the neighborhood suffers. The store owners and landlords should have a vested interest...

Should have a vested interest? Such as...? High taxes and an additional tax to pay the SSHHD cleaners that go through every morning aren't enough for you?

Correct not only not enough for me but for everyone. Besides the few sweeps here and there the SSHHD cleaners provide, there should be more. Now I am completely aware there is ongoing constrcution but the new walkways already look gross, the new stair hatch covers have graffiti on them. By the way, I live in the QV and have watch my taxes go up and services go down...SO when I refer to vested interst, I mean if trash is in front of your establishment, pick it up, push a broom...better yet speak up so law enforcement who is supposed to be walking the beat issues a littering citations rather then cotducding personal phone calls on cell phones. I will note there are a few folks who already do this...

Ok, please clarify what you're saying.

Are you saying that it's the businesses themselves that are the problem?

Is it the businesses not cleaning up enough?

Are you saying that the nearby residents cause the problems? You know, by using the trashcans on the corners for household trash, as evidenced by the kitchen bags in said cans?

Is it the businesses not cleaning up enough?

Is it the residents who don't clean up enough?

Or is it the danged people that stroll and toss? And we should just follow them along and pick up right after them?

It is everyones' problem and I believe everyone contributes to it. Each of the things you listed is very true. I'm shocked that business owners wouldn't be interested in cleanliness inf front of their stores, I'm shocked that residents of QV (at the very least owners) wouldn't be interested in preserving their investments and I am shocked that people who visit the hood feel it is acceptable to use the sidewalks as trash cans. You can tell me that South Street is clean. SO I got back to say that this overhaul really doesn't matter.Just anohter project in/out of a list of to do's

Well, what would YOU like then? I am happy to have sidewalks that are relatively even and not broken up, as so many were. I am happy that many of the crappy looking and rusted out cellar doors are or have been replaced, and now don't look so hazardous to walk on. I see the cleaners out in the morning sweeping up the sidewalks. I even heard a streetcleaner coming over South St. last night. Short of bulldog security agents watching and telling people to pick up the trash they've just dropped and risk running afoul of some crazy "dad" who doesn't appreciate one *disciplining* his kids--what can be done? You tell us?

I too am happy with the new changes. I guess then I am confused as to how other cities do it. There are other "South Street" types places in the US and they have figured out how to keep these places clean. Your question is loaded but my thoughts on South Street would be to have a crew come through after hours and hose from top/down South Street. Empty the overflowing trash cans, pick up the trash that is too big for the SSHHS crew to pick up etc etc. Since there is an investment being made then why not invest in maitaining. Just as an example, on SUnday morning at 10ish, South Street looked like hell. Meanwhile (not fault of their own) a SSHHS cleaner was sweeping a couple og cig butts. Does that make sense?

Now for the fairyland answer "I expect people to be responsible for themselves." Based on what you see, are you happy? Contnet?

Dear "QV resident",
Here's some full trashcans for you.

These are QV trashcans in the residential areas of QV. QV and Society Hill residents can be found every morning dumping trash into south street cans as well. Guess how much of your "tax paying dollars" go to its cleanup. Zero. All funds are assessed against local businesses, not residents.

Its a little hard for a business owner to sweep in front of their storefronts when dust and debris is constantly blowing from the streetscape project.

Its SSHD, not whatever acronym you made up.

Meanwhile, the contractors who do the cleanup every day do a pretty good job. So the guy was picking up some "og cigarette butts"-whatever that means-when you first saw him. That doesn't mean that they were not working-they work hard, and were surely going to get whatever bothered you so much. With over 1/4 of the neighborhood budget going to clean up(yes, because of residents as well), it would be near impossible to hire 24/7 cleanup crews just to appease the masses.

Additionally, "other areas" don't have streetside trash pickup, as most areas are built with alleyways for proper waste pickup. Since our neighbors who live in the alleys vehemently oppose dumpsters everytime, most businesses have no choice but to place their trash in front of their business for pickup.

The streetscape isn't done, so its a little hard to do things like pressure washing and curb cleanouts with no sidewalks in certain areas.
