I don't know, but I will try to find out.
That said, while they were functional, they were far from offering ideal illumination. Also, there weren't enough of them. EDIT: "They go back to the Streets Dept, Lighting Division for refurbishment and reuse." Last edited by Tim K : 06-11-2008 at 03:43 PM. |

Yea the new streetlights will offer much better lighting and are much more aesthetically pleasing. I personally don't care what the hell they do with the old lampposts - give them to Camden for all I care; they're hideous and offer bad lighting.

General question for naysayers. When you walk up and down center city, jeweler's row, or just about any other major commercial area-do you b*tch about the street lights? You should since they are the same lights, with the only difference being the color. I know its strange that a commercial district would want a different color than industrial phthalo green, but businesses districts are wacky that way.
Here is a CC one, which is the same light used through the city. The next picture is south street, with some of the various types of old poles next to the new one. The last ones were also extremely hard to take care of. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

You really have to get over your notion that antiquated infrastructure can't be replaced. You keep claiming that the rest of the city is without while south street gets renovated. I'd really like to know what areas you are talking about, and what taxes they inject into the city of philadelphia. And yes-you're right, this streetscape is paid for with tax dollars-many of which are MY tax dollars and not yours since south street businesses pay a direct tax to the headhouse for beautification and cleanup. Other funding came from the federal government since south street is a major corridor and thoroughfare that needs newly implemented regulations for lighting and traffic signals. |

The new street lights started to fire up tonight, at least at the 100-200 block of South (I couldn't see how much further the lights went down the street). They light up the street about 5 times better than what was there before. Well, there's also a sh*t ton more lights than there were previously.
Not that I was ever really concerned about my safety on South Street, but the new lights make it feel much safer especially late at night. Everyone can argue about the color of the poles, but I think the new illumination on the street is great. |
