Relax. I suppose, different strokes for different folks is in order here? For the record, I thought the same thing, though.

And there you have it. There are those who will defend South Street's right to look the way it does. If you aren't so crazy about it, stay off of it, don't live on or near it, or just patronize other businesses on other streets. Philadelphia is probably just big enough to have something to suit most people.

To make South Street like Georgetown, we'd have to truck in a couple buses full of spoiled rich kids in popped-collar polo shirts and another bus of 20-something d-bags in Armani Exchange tee shirts who smell like they bathed in Drakkar Noir.

HG + Drakkar Noir = gag, worse than the onion stench by Jim's Steaks. Blech.

Nah, just have Trader Joe sponsor the 'Italian Market' and set up a big store in the abandoned corner. Nothing like a store built by an LA guy who targeted the 'overeducated and underpaid' demographic to spruce up 9th St

Wasn't Gladys the one who recently reappeared to rave about the philly aids thrift store? Hmmm...not exactly crate and barrel, and certainly not befitting of the oh so classy georgetown.

Yet this is what less intelligent people do not understand. Our district houses everything from one of the top restaurants in the nation to the one of the top record shops in the nation to one of the top tattoo shops in the nation. I appreciate all three-people like gladys-who don't have a clue about what a proper mix is-want b and c gone.

And the reason why I "snip" at you is not because of your opinions-it is because you are almost always factually wrong, just as front and bainbridge...thank god club kama sutra is gone-otherwise the aging know-nothings may copulate and spawn.

Default Queen Alesis

Well excuse me Ms. Queen Alesis, mam goddess herself.

Seriously what made you pope of South Street, or Philadelphia for that matter. Remember this is a blog with different ideas, opinions and rationale. You have the complete right to disagree with not only myself but with everyone else here.

As you already know about me, I will admit when you make a good point and perhaps correct my feelings. ie- I really mis spoke when I mentioned G-Town. I was merely comparing the two not saying that South Street should become G-Town.

I too enjoy the mixture of cultures and variety of shops that are on South Street. By no means am I saying we should do away with Record shops, thrift shops, Tattoo parlors or any of the great sandwich shops. I am basically saying, that we can CLEAN it up a bit, make it more attractive in order to really capitalize on the tourists that we are lacking.

Using Facts- Philadelphia is one of the least traveled major city in the Country. -Travel and Leisure Magazine.

We spend very little when compared to NY, AC, DC, LA, Chicago, etc... on marketing our city.

One of the highlights of a tourist is there visit to South Street, I believe that we can make this visit more desirable, that is all.

A new Street, with new curbs, new Trees and landscaping as well as new Lighting would do a tremendous job to lift the economy of South Street and I have no doubt that if you disagree with this you are the one missing facts. Of course a minor inconvenience for this year, but in the long run a MUCH NEEDED FACE LIFT.

Good day all-

Actually, using airport figures, from only two years ago, we actually moved into #9 in the country, so T + L, creator of that stupid poll that has us at #25 in attractiveness , is incorrect.

What to allocate to the marketing/branding arms of cities is a perennial problem. Most places underbudget them because it just seems so frivolous to spend money on tourism marketing when there. are. just. so. many. more. things. that. need. attention. It is the the guns or butter argument all over again. For the money that they do receive, PCVB and GPTMC do a fantastic job of marketing. We tend not to see the results HERE because we aren't targeted, we're already here. But, if my walk through town and the Reading Terminal Market yesterday is any indication, someone is really on the ball.

You know, I have been to some pretty funky places in the Village in Manhattan, I wonder if people are always trying to Disney-fy them? Yes, cleaner would be nice, but I see the trash trucks go down the street; trees are great, but the sidewalks are already pretty narrow, and between the chairs, the pedestrians, the storefronts, and now more trees, ouch, I just see as much potential for problems as not. Personally, I recommend tasers for those that litter, but that's for another thread.

Relax, and try to enjoy what is there, others seem to. Or, alternately, go to another strip.

Oh I love what is there! Just saying we can make it more attractive to out of towners. I constantly here friends from other cities call South Street dirty and grimey. That is not the impression I want one of one of our main tourist destinations. Again, not saying to do away with the culture or the genre, just saying we can make the Street a cleaner more desirable street to walk along and visit. Perhaps once they are done construction, we can have Parking only on one side of the Street??
