I do believe that the reason for the asphalt around the cellar doors is that they are still going to be replaced. TimK or alesis can confirms that. The project isn't complete, yet.

Personally, I love the "tear the whole thing down and rebuild" system they have going. South St. was filthy before. It needs to be prettied up to support all the new folks that live directly adjacent to South St. back in 1999-2000 I can remember riding my bike down 6th and there were no fancy yuppies, now it's all pimped out rehabs and nice. That area needed a facelift to match the folks moving in. If it take years, then so be it. It'll get done.

From what I can tell, the contractors ON THE STREETSCAPE PROJECT have been doing very well and working very quickly.
so - what about the meter boxes/poles that alesis mentioned - was that an error or are we just getting meters back on the street?

as for the Streetscape project itself - yes, it's moving along as quickly as it can, but i guess what i meant was the fact that it was originally pitched as an organized redo - a block at a time up one side and then down the other.

I understand the reasons why they are doing a few blocks at once - each in a different phase - it will complete the job a bit quicker than originally planned. But in the meantime, you have several blocks at once all in some form of disrepair - toss in abandoned storefronts and a few buildings being overhauled - and it just makes the strip look sad.

But I agree - by fall (hopefully) the street will look and feel great - and we can all get cheap shoes at Payless - hehe

Um. Do you realize that SSHD is not a community association? SSHD is a business district. SSHD headed up this project, secured the funding and worked with the businesses in the district to make it happen. This is NOT being done for the benefit of the adjacent residents. This is being done to improve the aesthetics, safety, and accessibility of South Street for the benefit of the merchants. Broken greasy sidewalks, a half dozen trees, some covered in disgusting gum, and dim old streetlights are not ideal for a shopping district.

As for the meters, yes the posts were put in by mistake as all of South from front to 8th is supposed to get the boxes.

The tar/asphalt around the grates is temporary until the new stainless steel doors arrive and are installed.

Default trees

As I posted earlier, I was so sad to see South Street's trees get cut down!!! But I'm very happy to hear they're planning to plant new trees up the street throughout the district. The trees make such a big different -- if that's all the project was, I think it'd be a great success.

For now, South Street is a wreck of a construction project, but we can only hope the result will be a comfortable, attractive streetscape that it's always deserved. How ironic, though, that the "new" lightposts have to be replaced with newer new lightposts! I hope the, uh, old "new" lightposts can be used elsewhere in the city -- they're pretty attractive and worth keeping, in my opinion.

Hoping for the best....

Some days I wonder why I even bother talking on this squak box.

To cliffnote:
-Poled meters switching to boxes
-Trees getting replaced. The old ones were unstable because all urban trees have a lifespan and there's was about 15 years too long
-the project will take months, not years
-asphalt around doors is temporary to keep rain out until new doors are installed
-the corners will be done as soon as newly instituted federal handicap requirements are met.
-TimK is a boardmember of the South Stree Hierarchy District-if you don't believe him on his facts, then you wouldn't believe Alicia Layne had a Va-jay-jay is she came up and slapped you with it.
-SouthStMan has been a resident longer than most. Same with Hgirl. They know more about the inner workings of this street than most know about themselves.
-I know everything.

As some ******* just said, time for a drinkypoo. I hate when people think they are being cute with their word usage.

And respectfully, if anyone thinks the old poles are so much better, please walk up and down the street where several new poles are within inches of the old ones during the transition. I never condemn people for their personal tastes, but I put out a cuter boom boom this morning than what the old turdly industrial poles look like.
