Alesis, would you mind posting some pics of the work that's happened between Front and 3rd? I haven't been able to get all the way over there lately, and would like to see how it's turning out. The sidewalks have been taken out on my end. And now one of my windows won't close properly.

Ok, on a purely pragmatic note...is anyone having any difficulties as a result of the sidewalk displacement and jackhammering, etc? I have personally had my phone service disrupted, and our tenants have said that as a result of the sidewalk and street work, they have had water in their part of the basement after last week's storm. It will probably be worse after tomorrow's, since the sidewalk is completely torn up.

We walked between front and 3rd on south tonight and there is no new concrete cracking. There are some areas that still have old cracked concrete because the handicapped access areas still need built-but the areas that are completed are not cracked in any way.

A couple of businesses had their cable knocked out. I can believe the basement leaks due to obvious seepage from the sidewalk gaps from demoltion.

As for picts, there's not too much to see. The concrete is symmetrical, the lights are in, but there are still holes for the upcoming trees and meters, and the corners still need done. Oh, and the cellar doors still need done.

With regard to the cellar doors.... SSHD offered to pony up 1/2 the cost to replace every cellar door on South Street with brand new stainless steel doors. About 4 businesses took us up on that offer. Our exec director went to the city and feds who are funding this project and got them to agree to cover the other half. Now every cellar door from Front through 8th will be replaced with brand new stainless steel doors.

Apparently this wasn't out of the kindness of the feds' heart.... rather the contractors ran into structural
problems with the existing doors and would have had difficulty in working around them.

Regardless, this is good news for the street! Those doors run about $2,100 apiece installed and I think there are nearly 100 of them.

Good news. A lot are in crap shape. We replaced ours a few years ago, and it was fine, but with this work, water has gone into our basement. I suspect today will be another fine day...

Zur, I agree with you sometimes and I don't want to come off as the typical ignore everything zur says cause its zur-

but you really seem to be doing loops just for the sake of an argument. Of course locals don't drive local business. If you divided the "local" population amongst over 500 businesses, its easy to ascertain that rent wouldn't be covered by their small investment.

However, you then invoke "visitors" while criticizing the fact that the street's getting repaired. Do you really think visitors are going to have a problem with new sidewalks and lights? And even if you think it looks "suburban"(which I disagree with), how would this negate visitors. Let's say I agree with you for one moment. Why do you think Olive Garden, Applebees, Maggiano's, etc. in CC are absolutely sold out everytime there is a convention? Its quite easy-they are comfortable with things that are the same as their "suburban" surroundings. A very vast majority of visitors will eat at olive garden for their entire week's stay before daring the "strange" marathon grill across the street. I have heard this so many times it doesn't even phase me anymore. Over and over-anytime I do business with a conventioneer its chain meal time. So, even if I agreed that south street was going to look like suburbia, the visitors certainly wouldn't dislike it.

I wouldn't be surprised if half of them could just be pulled out from the sidewalk without much effort.
