They started marking the street at the end of the week. The next step I believe is "trenching" for the wiring of the lights. After that they are ripping up the sidewalks. They will tear things up on one side of the street....one block at a time. I don't recall which side they are starting on but I think the North side.
They will do the sidewalks on one side of the 100blk. Then about a week or two later they will move to the same side of the 200blk....and so on staying on the same side of the street all the way up. Then they will work their way back down the other side one block at a time to the 100blk. When the sidewalks and lighting is done, they will then come in an resurface the street itself. It is supposed to be done by the fall. Supposedly, they will end their workdays at 3:30pm, and 'boardwalks' will be installed to make sure there is access to all the businesses during the construction. I THINK parking is only going to be prohibited on one side of the street at a time but I could be mistaken. |

The one thing the south street headhouse district kept telling businesses is that the street will never be closed, and that its in the contract to keep this from happening.
Well, the street's closed. They're doing Front to 2nd right now, and at the end of the day they leave with the bulldozers and trucks right in the middle of the street with the road taped off. Great start to lie during the first few days of the project. Hopefully our resident SSHD boardmember can tell us who to sue when our businesses are affected.

hehe...sorry, lost the satire. I take it you are against the new meters? I used it in baltimore and thought it was a fair system. I haven't tried the system on 2nd and lombard since I have permit parking and live in the neighborhood.

No, actually, I like the system alot; more efficent and it allows more spots since there's no fixed amount ( as we've mentioned on this forum, PPA will tkt you if you are NOT technically in a metered spot, but squeezed into extra space between meters). the sarcasm was that if it's a good and efficent system, Philly won't do it. (Oh boy, do I have the Negadelphia 'tude ALREADY after living here only 15 months???) So, are they going to put that on South St too???

Welcome to the dark side.
I don't think they have plans to do it on south street. When I went to the meeting about all of this stuff they seemed like they did the system on 2nd street because of future rennovation plans for 2nd street between south and lombard. Quote:

I don't mind the new meter thing too much, though one thing does annoy me: let's say the average person pulls up, plunks a quarter in, gets their ticket and puts it in the windshield. But then you're only there a couple minutes. Under the old system, when you pulled out, there was still money on the meter for the next person. Now it's just lost (or, given away to PPA).
I guess that's a nitpick, but I imagine that money adds up, and was one reason for the new system. Or maybe I'm just cynical.
