Do you mean the trash from people who USE the restaurants, then decide that they are just too effing lazy to walk a few steps to a trashcan? Is that really the fault of the restaurants in the area? Or is it one of humans? Who really should be tasered to establish a Pavlovian response when they attempt to litter in the future.

LOL. I agree.

Yeah, its a mixture i guess. Like i said most of the restaurants happen to be very good about it. Probably the ones that aren't are an exception and not the rule.

If you ever travel, it is amazing the streets inside the massive populated towns of China, or the great cleanliness in the cities of Europe, or even some of our own (chicago, seattle, dallas).

We can never be perfect... but it would be nice if we can be better then we are at keeping clean. But yes you are probably correct, lots of pedestrians leaving eateries probably create the biggest part of the problem.

I am in Tokyo now. You would be surprised at the debris to be found at the usual, suspect, places--along the commercial corridors and the train stations I have seen discarded cans from the many, innumerable vending machines, coffee cups, and assorted other trash. I have also seen trash left outside in the rain that looked as though it was attacked by an animal, with soaking debris scattered around. I felt right at home.

It isn't Philadelphia, even with some of its massive failings; it is humans, who are lazy and slothful. And apparently they have replicated themselves elsewhere.

Don't know much about Tokyo, but have fun there and enjoy your stay! It is all about Humans and our shortcomings in this area. But one must have to admit that certain cities do have something figured out that we dont. This is not a south street thing either, it is a city wide problem. Then again, we are cleaner then NY! (at least most areas)

It isn't a citywide thing, either. Look at other areas of the City, notably vast swaths of the NE, and the NW, where people live. It is clean there. Litter stands out like a sore thumb, and someone makes the effort to pick it up. And the problem with South Street is there are many transients and many who live there who don't bother to take proper steps to secure their own damned trash. It is far less a problem of the businesses in the area. My own neighbors are a point of this problem. They take out 5 or 6 kitchen bags a week, and they don't bother to even tie the handled ends. How much sense does it take to realize to do that?

In the end, it's people.

my apologies db,
maybe together we can convince our neighbor at xx6 that crappy littlecarboard boxes with trash and additional debris by his garage door are quite distressing to those of us who want a clean neighborhood.

Unlike those who have owned a property on the street for shortly over a year, I have seen every side of the fence be a culprit.

Before a typical day begins, neighbors are throwing their trash from the night before into public receptacles. Even when confronted, they find it their given right-after all, its just a small bag- and what are they to do since their maid doesnt come til wednesday even though they have a back yard that could fit 100 garbage cans.

After the "its just a lil' bag" people fill the cans, in come the dog poop bags.

Then LRC, who cleans both south street and qv(in the summer) puts items as large as bent bicycle rims to further fill public receptacles.

As day progresses, businesses dump old sale signs into the same.

Here come deliveries. Since they must do so curbside, the standard 18 wheeler generally bends or breaks trees, and as they progressively get broken, they disappear from the street.

In comes peco, who tend to tear up the sidewalk, on average, three times a month, yet only replace stone with tar until state lawsuits are filed.

The planted trees have grown. Businesses are pissed that their new signs are hidden by the leftover spring trees. The nnn lessee or prop owner is responsible for the "incumberance". They magically make the "stump" disappear one day.

Time for business!

As a business opens, they're swarmed with urchin looking to sell employees everything from broken skis to oudated magazines. When the bums realize that their bounty is worthless, they tend to distribute said objects through the neighborhood.

Night time is obvious.

Afterwards, everyone from bridgets to numer one chinese puts grease in their common trash receptacles, which causes spillage onto the street.

Meanwhile,100's of renters and owners put their trash curbside, many times on the wrong night, while drunks kick it around.

I haven't even begun to touch the problem.

Default Starting the Streetscape today?

So, I think the Streetscape Project has been started...TODAY. I am working, well trying to write, and have been distracted by the sound of machinery outside of my windows. Sure enough, crews are out there, sawing up the street.

Have I mentioned it's fun living on South Street, where for some reason, everything seems to happen outside of our house?

Nope. Different project altogether. They are ripping up from 7th or 8th down to 5th for a water main or something like that.

The streetscape is supposedly starting in march on Front and South.

Well, thank you for the clarification; and it's decidedly 8th St.

When I was in Hong Kong several years ago, the lack of street litter along the water front was amazing.

Since the time zone is 12 hours apart - I would get up and go for a walk at 5am (just as the sun rose).

There was an ARMY of street sweepers. I have no idea if they were hired or what (it almost looked as if they were street people who would clean up a 50' section). By 6:00am they were gone and the waterfront was filled with people doing Tai Chi.

Not too far removed formt he CCD people working hard to keep the place clean.
Or the "army" of Streets people after a parade or other event.
