Default queens village

I'm looking at a place now in Queens village, monroe street in particular, anyone live around there? Like? Dislike? How is the parking? I was wanting no libs as it's close to where I want to be but the place I was looking at seems to have dropped off the radar. How about gyms, good neighborhood bars/restaraunts besides new wave and dmitris. I only really drove through the area when I was there did not walk around. It seemed pretty cool to me. Also coffee, where is the best coffee...

I love it in Queen Village. I love For Pete's Sake on the corner of Front & Christian. There are too many good places to eat. The new Mexican place is good, too.

Thank goodness for gyms. I use Pennsport. It's small and older but has great people and I have made friends there. I go with my neighbors. A new gym opened on 5th with all new equipment, etc. A little more expensive.

Monroe is a nice street. Buy soon, housing prices are getting really crazy (insane).

Neighborhood is safe, entertaining. and close to just about everything. The subway is a short haul, but not bad.

Queen Village is really nice and Monroe is one of the nicer streets. The one major problem (or benefit, depending on how you view it) is proximity to South Street. I personally can't stand South and avoid it like the plague. During the day it is fine and is an interesting walk but during Friday and Saturday nights it is a zoo - full of rowdy kids who have nothing to do but hang around and be rowdy. Monroe is a few blocks away from South so there's less overflow (but be wary of lack of parking on Friday and Saturday nights and loud post-2AM party goers returning to their cars). If you ask me, South Street is the main problem which is serving as a barrier preventing further residential development in South Philly (kind of ironic since a few decades ago when Queen Village was a dump South Street was seen as a launchpad for revitalization).

My wife says the subway is quite a haul. She estimates it'll take her 45 mins to get to Drexel from Queens village via bus to subway or bus alone.
That seems a little dramatic. Isn't there a quick way to get to the subway or to drexel. I guess she could bike it.

In years way past there was an elevated line running from 2nd St. station on the Market Street line to South Street. This service ended in the 30's I believe - the reason being that the El was extended to the NorthEast in the 20's and the line from Market to South became a stub end. I'm sure if the decision were made today this line would probably be kept since there is a demand for it now.

south street a barrier to redevelopment? maybe. I've been frequenting south st on/off for years. whiel that rowdy crowd is there the character of south street ahs already changed significantly. likely b/c of quee's village. there are now restaurants taht are restaurants not mostly bar with some food to eat when your drunk. it's pushing out towards broad st. as well. i saw two new contenders on south just west of 12th. it's only a amtter of time before those swaths of land are built-on. just the other side of broad are a few good bars and retaurants. at any rate, that area of section 8 just below south on 12th makes a lot of people nervous. i din't know about that elevated. I've been intrigued by the idea of a passyunk subway running from girard estates up passyunk to queen's village and then running up second or third street (crossing south.) and connecting with the El at second street. if the city showed solid growth in population ( at least in cc) as well as jobs i think it's be worth the investment. i can easily get to south philly, the vet, etc from my wash. sq. enclave but to get to south i have to walk. not bad when it's nice out but in winter it's not desirable.

I would think there would be a demand. As it is i'm planning on staying in the no libs area. I didn't move to the city to have a 45 minute commute to work, . Work is only about 10 mins from no libs by subway. I can't believe no libs hasn't taken off with the easy access to the area.

Thanks for the input though.

shhh, nolibs id taking off but thankfully t he speculative side has been a bit more limited. it hink it's proximity to the feared north philly hurts it but it will get a good swift kick in the arse when the new trolley comes in. Girard needs some activity to provide a more solid mental boundary. in NolIBs things could change swiftly is someone decides to do something with the ortlieb's site. actually, i'd like to see that passyunk subway extendnorthward into the western side of nolibs and perhaps up to germantown but those are distant dreams. it's so hard to get to germantown/mt. airy that a subway would be a vast improvement.

oh, and the "new mexican" restaurant is Las Cazuelas. it's s econd, fancier location from their popular NoLibs location at 4th and girard. i've been in ther for some fancy tequila but it was very nice. loved the design.

Default Queen Village - Drexel

The El would have to be one leg of a 2-leg commute between Q. Village & Drexel: the 57 bus (northbound on 3rd, southbound on 4th) and the El from 2nd/5th St. stations to 34th St. The length of the whole trip would depend, as it usually does, on how long one has to wait for the bus, which can vary tremendously.

South street is different than even 8 years ago but generally not bad on a normal night. It still has shops I love and some really great places to eat (love the newer sushi places). Friday and Saturday nights during nice weather I avoid that place like no other. I have been verbally assaulted 2 times for crossing the street *in a cross walk*. It's ugly. But during the day and most other nights it's a great place.

BTW, the places just off South Street don't get the S. St. kids - e.g. Azafran, O'Neals, etc.

I also love Head House and the pubs up there.

Parking kind of sucks in Queen village, like every other place in the city. Fridays and Saturdays I avoid moving my car after 8 p.m. There is no place to park when I get back. Such is life.

As for the subway, you can haul it on over to Broad and South (for me that's about 6 blocks north and 13 blocks W) or you can haul it on up to 2nd and Market. Either way, about a 20-25 min. walk. Okay in sneaks, but majorly sucks in anything else. Sucks big time in the heat.

Septa is updating their website with bus schedules, etc. in a much more user friendly format (I have a good friend who is in charge of this project at Septa - I complain everyday!). Be patient - it's coming.
