Hi I am new to the board and just had a few questions about the neighborhood. I am moving to QV not far from For Pete's Sake (which is a great little place) and was wondering just how safe this area is. I am a single woman planning on living by herself and want to know what to expect in this area. The few times i have visted it has seemed nice and relativily safe but that was during the day and i know some neighborhoods change as the sun goes down. Thanks for any help!

I live one block from For Pete's Sake. I moved into the city a few months ago, also curious about the neighborhood. So far, my experience has been positive (knock on wood). I can't say I've ever felt threatned in that immediate area. Of course, keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings, regardless.
My girlfriend might tell you a slightly different story. She is really sick of being harrassed by construction workers, because in case you haven't noticed, there are quite a few homes and areas under construction. It doesn't matter if she's wearing a huge sweatshirt and jeans, either way, they are going to yell sexual comments at her. But that's south philly I guess. Just thought I would mention that because she's been frustrated over it. |

Thanks, as i was walking around i noticed the "cat calls" from the workers but if that is the only complaint i am even more excited! Everyone needs alittle confidence booster every once in awhile! Kidding! Thanks! :clapping:

i never get catcalls from the workers. then again i'm a brunette and flatchested, so they probably don't notice me at all.
anyway! i've lived in qv for about 10 months now and have never had a problem or felt threatened in any way. the latest i've been out walking is 10 pm or so though. the worst i've come across are people asking for money or to introduce themselves (this can be creepy when they have 4 teeth and are smoking much funny stuff). basically, if you mind your own business and are polite you shouldn't have any problems. walk with your head up and shoulders straight, act like you know where you're going even if you don't. if you're still worried, i'd suggest taking some krav maga (self defense) classes. i could only afford a month, but it made a *huge* difference in my upper body strength and confidence. they have a studio at 9th and ellsworth (www.kravmagapa.com). |

I have lived in the 2nd & Christian St area for 16 years. It is an amazingly safe area. The police reports show that, for a huge city, our crime rate is very low. It is a big city, however. "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!" Women alone may want to use 2nd St. It is more brightly lighted and has more traffic. I would suggest all neighbors come to our monthly community meetings. They are on the third Thursday of each month, at St. Philip's Church in the 200 Block of Queen St. at 7:30pm. It is a wonderful forum to ask questons and meet our neighbors.
