Hey all,
I'm moving from West Phil. to South and Front and was starting this to ask a few question as they pop up in the move. My first question is about parking for the actual move-in. I am assuming a double-park job at the corner of Front and South isn't going to work, however, when we looked at the place we noticed an empty lot behind the building on what I think is Naudain st or possibly Hancock (I don't exactly remember.) It had what looked like parking spaces spray painted in, but there were no cars. Does anyone know what's up with this lot, and if we would have a problem with a truck there for a few hours? There will, I am sure, be more questions to come, but for now, thanks for any replies. ~ Last edited by ac2be : 04-18-2007 at 03:49 PM. Reason: their>there, duh |

"When moving in is difficult, you can request "no parking" signs in front of your new place. The local police will put them up(in this case the ministation)."
Thanks for the advice, that sounds like a pretty good plan. Any thoughts on when I should contact them to have the signs up? Also, I may contact Downeys to see if they have a loading zone we can "borrow" for a while. Any thoughts on a plan like that working? Thanks again. |

Call the street's dept. traffic dev. at 215-686-5525 by 3 PM the business day prior to your need. They put up the signs for you...
Here is the exact quote from the street's dept. website, fyi: 8. How do I temporarily prohibit parking for moving, work, delivery, etc? Contact the Streets Department's Traffic Division at 215-686-5525 by 3 PM the business day prior to your need.

Alesis, Gracias. I couldn't have asked for a better answer to my question. Now on to the next. Where can I park a car for relatively cheap? We are looking for under 100 a month and as close as possible to Front and South, if this is possible. Anyone know of any good spots?
Thanks in advance... |

Call the 1st district , i think the person is charge is Off. Diaz or Gonzalez. Anyway, call to give them a head-ups on when you are moving and then call back two days prior to moving to remind them. At least that is what i did and they kindly put up no parking signs with dates.Welcome to the neighborhood: |

The cheapest alternative is a few blocks away on Front and Christian.
Queen Village Neighborhood Association has a lot where you can park for $75/mo. Call Kevin White from the Parkway Corporation at 215-790-1146. Other than that you can get a parking permit for about $35/yr. that allows you to park anywhere you see a "7" parking sign. During the evenings, weekend you have to drive around for parking a little, but its never been terribly frustrating. It is a pretty wide reaching permit, so you can park in designated areas from less than a block away from your house clear up to about 6th street. http://www.philapark.org/permits/permit_info.aspx Other than that, garages start at around $150, and private spots usually start around $100 and up, although the nearest private spot I've ever seen for rent would be up 5th. If you don't mind the relatively short walk I'd recommend the qvna lot. I've personally had a permit for years with next to no problems-yes, when my wife an I go out on weekend evenings we sometimes have to drive around to find a spot, but rarely did we have to drive around "forever"-I guess it depends on your patience level. I live right at Front and South. Parking options are the queen village lot or a street parking permit. The permit is only $35 a year. You need to have proof of residence in that area and your vehicle must be registered at that address as well. You will probably get a #5 permit which is what we have. This allows you to park as far south as Bainbridge and as far north as maybe Walnut. #5 also goes about as far West as I think 10th.
As for moving, either go with the suggestion of the police signs or just park your truck on the street in front of that chained-off lot with the blinkers on. They actually put the chains up a few weeks ago after about the 3rd time someone dumped piles of trash in the lot. You might even get the owners permission to use the lot for the day. I have done so by emailing him at the address on the for sale sign (rlondon AT guesswho.com). Downeys doesn't have a loading zone on Front street, but if you are lucky you might get one of the 3 spots between Downeys and the vacant lot that allow 3 hour parking during the day. Worst case scenario, if you move during a weekeday, the metered spots on the East side of Front street are always available. It would only cost you a $1 an hour....cheaper than a ticket.
