Default Anyone nervous about the state of South Street?

I have lived in QV for over 12 years and the city for over 35. So I know South Street well and I know the cycles it has gone through.

I have to say, while South Street west of 7th is getting better all the time, South Street east of 7th is quickly becoming pretty bad. Basically a 7 block string of junk shops selling split-crotch panties, cell phones, cheap jewelry, electronics. And it seems to be getting worse each year . . . a strip for teenagers and worse, tourist teenagers, like the Wildwood boardwalk. I know that element was always there, but never so out of balance as now. South Street is the worst I can remember it having been since at least the late 70s.

There are a few cool stores left, Pearl, some good record stores, a few decent restaurants (mainly off South), but the cheesy, low-brow teen-oriented demographic seems not to favor this kind of business over the longer term.

I am afraid that South Street is becoming something akin to the Chestnut Transitway of the early 80s mixed with alcohol.

Do you feel more optimistic? If not, any thoughts on how to change the direction things seem to be going?

Any comment/counterpoint?

So what would you like to see there?

What would everyone else like to see there?

Honestly,

RuggerAl would love to see a Karma Sutra II, especially since RuggerAl missed out on Karma Sutra I. The stretch from 7th to let's say Broad... Not the whole corridor has to be shopping, a lot of the area is residential, I think it picks up in business a bit around 10th, with the two super markets, the glass structure place. RuggerAl isn't really sure what you're looking for, I'm all for adding more bars, but RuggerAl is 24 and thinks with RuggerAl's and RuggerAl's liver. There is contstruction happening at 11th St. Let that play out, and everyone plus RuggerAl will go from there, see what's to do about what. Market forces might occur on South St. like they have in other areas, with the "perceived" problem stores getting priced out, but for the moment, RuggerAl sees no problem with South St. RuggerAl hasn't been around as long though either...

Cheers,
RuggerAl drank at Cheers last night, and it was good

Anyone have a few million to shake some properties out of Axelrod's hands? He is the $$$ behind Triad Realty, the main realtor behind some of the empty or available buildings you see right now. But, the argument could be made that they are looking more closely at just whom is approaching them for these parcels before they allow them to go into leases. I really don't know.

Default South Street

I live near 6th and South, and I hate the crappy stores that line the street, but I do enjoy Tattoo'd Moms, CHOPSHOP and the cheap take out beer at Philideli. It would be great if some bookstores would come back. I remember Paper Moon from years ago.

Bookstores are wonderful, but I pause to think of how many people really want to use them more as a library than as a place of commerce these days? That and the internet (although personally I hate waiting for books and always walk out with a couple) are what are really killing the brick and mortar bookstores. Think carefully about your purposes when you ask for one of these.

Totally, off topic but I noticed that sometimes Rugger Al speaks normally in the 1st person and other times RuggerAl speaks about himself in the 3rd person. Did RuggerAl suffer a brain injury while playing rugby because it is kind of retarded?
