The MLK area would have been a highly marketable location and should have been completely turned over to private developers. Instead, the government builds a bunch of brand spanking new houses and then turns them back over to the same scumbags who turned the neighborhood into a war zone. What a joke.

Once SWCC is fully gentrified, Hawthorne will be 1 of 2 areas in CC proper that will service the CC druggies. You cant gentrify/clean up these new projects for at least 20 years...

Hawthorne is the great South Philly experiment.

We'll see if high end home owners can deal with some of the traditional pit falls of low income housing.

We'll also see if the City can curtail the traditional pitfals that have ruined entire neighborhoods, previously in Phila.

It's all an experiment in my opinion.

That's a tortured sentence if ever I saw one.

What experiment? We've been dealing with this public housing disaster for 50 years and it has proven a complete failure for everybody involved. This is one program that needs to be abandoned. Why the hell am I paying for some useless scumbags to live in a brand new 250 grand house? Let them find their owning housing just like everybody else. Sell off the properites to the highest bidder I say.

Yer preachin to the choir here..... The Northeast section of Philly (and the Northeast Phillyblog) are going nuts because their working class neighborhoods are being infiltrated with section 8/welfare lowlifes.

One Phillyblogger (Zur I think....) said it best: When they took down all the high rise projects it's like spreading dirt all over a sandwich, before you avoided certain parts of the sandwich and now the whole thing is funky.

Green, don't worry you're not alone -- The same thing happened in my neighborhood!! I think the government's way of thinking is that if you mix a low income segment of the population with not so low income population -- The low income segment will try to improve their situation and learn how to behave like (somewhat) normal human beings. I'm curious to see how this all plays out in Philly.

I know that. I live in the former Tasker Homes area AKA Grays Ferry.

I'm not debating the issue. It's pointless and won't change a thing.

Hawthorn is different than any other area with public housing in Phila., at least to the best of my knowledge.
This has not been done before.
5-600,000 dollar homes within a stones throw of section 8 housing.

All units are new yet worlds apart in economic status.

Now do you see how it's an experiment? That's really all I was commenting on.

The increased use of cameras to deter crime is dangerous to a free society, if in fact we still are free. Yes they are public corners, but we are private citizens and have the right to our privacy.

The ends do not justify the means in this case. Over time we will not be able to move without being tracked and while that may make us feel more secure, we will in fact be less free.

Furthermore, it seems to me that cameras only move the crime along to other corners not under surveillance. I don't believe crime will go down over all. Instead of actually fighting crime politicians will take the easy way out and call for more cameras to supplement the ones that are already "working".

Cameras are not a good idea.

Bring on the cameras. I don't care who watches me walking down the street. Streets are PUBLIC. There are cameras in stores, airports, schools, & office buildings. If I owned a business, I'd want cameras. I own a home in Hawthorne. I want the cameras.
Seriously, if you have nothing to hide, why should you care about another camera. Infringing on free society - give me a break. Americans don't know what not being "free" is.
I see no difference between having cameras and having everyone else who is walking down the street, people sitting on a park bench or those looking out the window watch what you're doing when you're on a public sidewalk.

Default Cameras YES

Fully support the use of cameras to protect the freedom of the rest of us. Right now MY civil liberties are being violated by the scum who stand out on the corners of Hawthorne and make it unsafe for me to walk through the neighborhood.

Nothing would please me more than to be filmed (well, video-ed) walking up Fitzwater or Catharine to Broad AND feeling safe about where I am.

BTW, drug dealing scum are not limited to renters, I've seen family members of homes that are owner occupied dealing drugs as well. Either that, or their sons are the most popular kids in the region given the amount of people coming and going into the houses.
