Hi, I'm considering moving to QV, and one of my criteria is that there are good bars within reasonable walking distance. I'm not really talking about South St bars (at least not the ones I've seen that would be in the South St part of QV)- I like more corner bar-type places, especially those with some indie rock on the jukebox. 2 of my favorities in Philly are the Standard Tap (2nd & poplar) and Doobie's (Lombard & 21st or so). Anything like those places in QV?

Tattooed Mom's and the Tri-Tone are both on South St but further west, and might be to your liking. I like Royal Tavern... I have heard good things about Low (right next door to Royal) but I haven't been yet.

the royal's good. i think i went there almost every night for 7 months and can count the subpar meals/experiences i had in there on one hand. i've been boycotting lately because they fired my friend. low is more of a dive, but i dig that place too. drinks are pretty cheap, good patrons, and the bartenders throw in some interesting cds on a nightly basis. i go to the new wave pretty often as well, but i think it's a bit overpriced.

New Wave is cool. And the food is good too. Dark Horse is pretty cool too. It's on 2nd and Lombard. There's also a bar on the corner of Front and Christian and I forget the name of it. Sometimes it gets a little crowded and loud, but it's a nice little neighborhood bar.

Used to live in the area. New Wave rocks, much better than it's rep as just a waiting room for Dmitri's - darts, pinball and small pool table, slightly pricey but inventive fare, plus a half-decent juke and good stuff on tap. Staff is great. Whenever going down to get my seafood fix, I actually look forward to the wait so I can grab a drink and hang, then eat and afterwards head back over. Especially now that they have sidewalk seating and french doors. Used to be one of my staples - closed that place many, many a time.
Royal is ok, gets a little over-crowded, and seems a little too brightly lit - nice brunch though. Low is a dive, but small, cool and cheap. Mom's always a good time upstairs - best of the bunch on South - but the service downstairs absolutely sucks. For something less dive-like, the place above Beau Monde (forget the name) on Bainbridge is some good lounging - nice decor, usually a good DJ and a dance floor - haven't been in a while though. Stay away from La Creole. Never got around to Lion's Den or For Pete's Sake, so dunno... but from what I've heard they're worth looking into. |

There's a bar a little farther west (9th and Christian) called 12 Steps Down. I've never been there, but have been wanting to check it out. From the signs advertising happy hour, seems like they have decent beer and decent prices. It's underground, so I haven't even looked inside. But I'm curious. Anyone been there?
