Default Phila. bracing for hefty deficit

Phila. bracing for hefty deficit
By Nathan Gorenstein
Inquirer Staff Writer

Quote:
Philadelphia is facing a projected $144 million budget deficit, and city agencies will be asked to trim spending by an average of 8 percent to 9 percent next year, officials said yesterday.

No deficit was expected six months ago, when the city projected a surplus of $500,000 for the fiscal year starting July 1, 2004.

The newly projected shortfall was blamed on increasing pension and health-care costs for city workers, and slower revenue growth. Also contributing was a change in the way the city allocates some future savings, which had the effect of automatically shifting $24 million from the positive side of the ledger to the negative.

What could have been done to avoid this? What should we do to reverse this?

Time to start trimming the fat. We have a city government designed to support a population of 2.2 million people, Philadelphia only has about 1.5 million people. Nobody wants to see someone lose their job but thats whats going to have to be done for the good of the entire city.

The city employees are going to have to pick up some of their own health care costs just like everyone else.

Are there any union workers anywhere that contribute $xx per month toward their health care costs?

I find it ironic that Sam Katz got scoffed at for wanting to trim 1 percent a year from the budget during the campaign but now they're talking about needing 8 or 9 percent.

One step would have been to veto an across the board 15% pay increase for all city council members.... City Council gets a 15 % pay increase , meanwhile hard working city workers will be getting laid off, thats terrible

Street entered office with a $300 million dollar budget surplus so he's doing something tragically wrong to turn that into a $144 M deficit.[/b]

street knew he'd be overridden

just like he ran to the defense of same-partner benefits, after it went to the state supreme court

he knew that no previous case ever gotten past the court, and the benefits would be lost.

he became a champion of the same-sex/gay people for the first time, when he knew they'd lose

he's a mofo
