Default Crime Tracking

I'd like to start this thread to bring attention to the crimes in philadelphia, what they are, and where they were committed. I think it might make a good topic but here's a start.

LUCKLY KY MAY have saved his mother's life last night.

A decision that cost him his own.

The 19-year-old college freshman walked into his parents' South Philadelphia grocery store as gunmen pointed their weapons at his mother standing behind the small market's bullet-proof glass counter.

It's not technically in Pennsport. That's still in Queens Village, but the section is in the housing project between the nice parts of both neighborhoods. I walk home that way everyday. South on 4th from Market to Morris. Right through where both incidents occured. Makes me glad to carry. Less criminals when I'm done.

That poor 19 year old kid...what a senseless murder!
He was in college trying to make something of himself.

It is sad, but that tends to be a common story. Too many people try to take the quick and easy route, not enough people who want to work for something.

Philadelphia homicide rate increases 14.5%
The year's 330th killing put the city on pace to end with 348 murders - up sharply from '02.
By Michael Currie Schaffer and Natalie Pompilio, Inquirer Staff Writers
http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/n...al/7484443.htm

Quote:
When he was shot and killed outside a Girard Avenue McDonald's on Wednesday, Robert Crawford, 32, became Philadelphia's 330th slaying victim in a year that was already the bloodiest in the last five.

Through mid-December, the 2003 homicide total is 42 higher than the 288 killed in all of 2002. The city is on pace for 348 killings this year - which would be an almost 21 percent spike over last year and would make this the most deadly year since 1997, when 418 people were killed.

Police say there is little rhyme or reason for the carnage. Nationwide, most big cities saw homicide inch up last year, and cities including New York and New Orleans have also reached their 2002 total already.

"It seems like the trend is over the entire nation," Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson said.
To what do you attribute this?

Shootings kill 2 near Temple
The unrelated homicides happened several blocks and about a half-hour from each other.
By Dawn Fallik
Inquirer Staff Writer

Philadelphia police are investigating two unrelated homicides that took place early yesterday morning, both near Temple University.

The first killing happened on the 1600 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue about 2:30 a.m., Homicide Lt. Philip Riehl said.

Malik Pinkney, 25, of Philadelphia, was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital after being shot several times in the torso, Riehl said. He was involved in a fight that started in a local bar and moved outside to the street, police said.

Two other men were wounded. Anthony Richardson of Columbus, Ohio, was shot in the back. He was treated at Temple Hospital and released. Terrence Davis, 23, of Philadelphia, was in critical condition yesterday at the hospital with gunshot wounds to the torso, police said.

Two guns and bullet casings from two others were found at the scene, police said. Whether they belonged to any of the three men who were shot is under investigation. No arrests have been made, and there were no suspects.

The second shooting happened several blocks away about a half-hour later. John Gibson, 18, of Philadelphia, was visiting Douglas Dickerson, 38, in a second-floor apartment at 1517 Lehigh Ave., police said.

Dickerson fired a shot that hit Gibson in the head, police said. Gibson was pronounced dead at 3:28 a.m. at Temple hospital, Riehl said.

Dickerson was arrested and charged with murder, police said. They would not discuss a motive.

when looking for a place to live, it is nice to know the safety of it. most stats lump philly altogether which is rather misleading. plus, sometimes it's easy to say "crime is getting worse" or not beleive it at all depending on your particular area. i'm hoping that in six months this thread wil serve as a snapshot of where the most reported crimes are. it will also give people a good idea of areas to steer clear of when lookign for a home. the issue of crime is big and oft manipulated by politicians.
for example, I take the train to work everyday. the R6 which stops at north broad...not far from broad and lehigh. I had been considering taking the BSL up to North Broad. one of my coworkers asked the ocnductor if he thought it' be a good idea and he told him, you'd be a walking ATM. this is not three blocks from that train station. In a perfect world, I'd live right there.
