Default Pay-to-play bill falls one vote short

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/...l/11168359.htm
Quote:
AFTER SIX MONTHS of debate on pay-to-play reform, City Council comes up with: Nothing.

A resolution needed to enable changes in city contracting rules and political contributions fell a single vote short of the 12 needed for passage yesterday.

It was killed by four of Mayor Street's Council allies - Jannie Blackwell, Rick Mariano, Darrell Clarke, and Donna Reed Miller, and by Councilwoman Marian Tasco. Councilwoman Joan Krajewski was hospitalized and unable to vote
Shame on them. Shame on us for letting these people "represent" us. If I could have, i would have personally rolled Krajewski's hosital bed across town to make sure this vital reform passed.

Quote:
A Street administration memo distributed yesterday listed reasons to vote against the legislation, including harm that might come to minority firms from limiting campaign contributions.

"The traditional way for [minority] firms to be taken seriously and to get the attention of public officials is by means of political contributions," the memo read. "Restricting their ability to give is inevitably going to restrict their access; majority-owned firms will have access anyway."

Nutter said he was astounded by the assertion.

"That is absurd, and it goes to the heart of the issue," Nutter said. "You should not have to make campaign contributions to get noticed by the government."
It is absurd. Excuse me! Does anyone, anyone at all, accept the premise that no-bid political reward city contracts help legitimate minority-owned small businesses? No - it may help the Ron Whites and Shamsun din Alis of the world line their pockets but actual small business owners - give me a break.

This makes me ashamed to say I live in Philadelphia.

We should organize some kind of protest to show city hall that the people of Philadelphia are tired of the status quo. Make these people fear that they will not be re-elected and see how they respond...

This is a total disgrace. These same individuals are completely responsibly for backwards thinking and regressive policies that keep Philadelphia uncompetitive and behind.

It's time to start organizing progressive candidates to run against them and get these entrenched fools out of office once and for all.

It's time Philadelphia was stopped being held hostage by uneducated and uncultured losers who destroy the city with their stupidity and ignorance.

Great. Who's gonna do it? But, I absolutely agree, there should be an uprising.

OTH, I am somewhat glad that it cannot be on the May primary ballot (that's simply because I don't think any Charter changes, ballot questions, constitutional amendments, etc. should be on the Primary ballot). While it is legally possible (I believe) to cast a primary ballot if you do not belong to a party or belong to a third party, most election officials will try to block you. They all should go on the November ballot when everyone votes.

Philly politics will always be the same. This stuff has been going on for years, not just in the Street era. Rendell did the same for his people, but was not sloppy about it.

City Council is a bunch of GED educated morons. The only way to get them out is to make each one of them mayor.

If someone can put together a protest, I'm IN, I'll put up tons of banner space on here to bring attention to it.

How can you spread the word around and get the attention of the media for any planned demonstration?
