Default Enough griping: What's the plan?

All -

One of the great things about this board is that everyone has a chance to express their opinions.

One of the drawbacks, however, is that they are not always followed up by action.

I'm tired of it!

I don't care who anyone voted for, I don't care what your political affiliation is ... what are we going to do to make sure that Philadelphia is positioned to succeed in the new economy? What are we going to do to promote our city in the way we want it promoted?

I want someone here, on our board, to create and run a NON PARTISAN NON POLITICAL group that shows the country that we are controlling our own destiny here, and that regardless of what happens in politics, we are a city mindful of what is to come.

Who's up for it?

I'll donate my services to promote it nationally, don't worry about that, and I'll direct it, facilitate what I can, etc. - but this has to come from you, the community. You need to run it.

Again, who's up for it? WHAT ARE SOME ACTION ITEMS HERE?

~Jennifer

I'm certainly willing to help in which ways I can. Non-political, non-partisan? Good deal.

Default YIP

There is such a group - Young Involved Philadelphia. They're not just for the young, though getting younger people more involved in the city is one of their stated goals. But they have done a good job of bringing people together to discuss issues of importance to the city.

I'm aware of them ... yes, they're terrific. I get their emails.

The question remains, however: What's the action plan? What are we, the PhillyBlog community, going to do?

Do they have a web site?

I think Blog members can do their best to join such organizations or maybe start one of their own. One thing we all have in common here is a genuine love for the city. We just want what's best for Philadelphia... regardless of whether we agree with it or not, we can reach a resolution and move this city forward.

You are very quotable of late, IMPAQ. Thank you.

We need someone who can create/establish/maintain relationships with groups like YIP, or we need to create our own.

I would do it - honestly, I would - but there are only so many hours in the day, and I have to run my business, make sure I can eat every so often, etc. (Joking - everything here is good.)

I just don't have the time - that's why I'm putting it out there. It is not for lack of interest. I'll support the effort.

I want to see something created that is a coalition of ALL GROUPS that carries the city's message ot the country. NATO for Philadelphia.

Again, I will donate national promotions services to the cause. But I want the effort to come from our community - the PhillyBlog community.

All we need is a point person to reach out and coordinate.

Jen -

Wouldn't you have to figure out what the action items are first? You'd have to know exactly what it is that you're coordinating before you'd take on the job, no?

You'd have to have a mission and tangible goals, I would think, and an understanding of how to get things done or who to talk to to get things done, yes?

I LOVE NEW YORK!

Yes, we would.

So the goals are:

1. To promote Philadelphia NATIONALLY on a grass roots level as a city that is in control of its own destiny

2. To leverage that and get the buy-in of the Street Administration to that end - and get it to support it, to speak to the nation about it

3. To leverage the resources of and coordinate the efforts of all groups in this region to the end of making the country aware of the fact that Philadelphia cares about its future, we are in control of it and that we intend to show people how great it is

Action items:

* PhillyBlog needs someone to be a rep to reach out to all groups in the city on its behalf and get them to join (create the coalition) - we need a volunteer. We could facilitate lots of connections for this person.

* We'd support that person by getting the right people to pay attention from the Street admin and get their support - we already know some folks there. Steve has great contacts, too.

* Create a national campaign - that TRULY comes from the people of this city - to get people to understand that we give a damn about its future, and that we are willing to support it with action. Again, I'll donate my efforts to this end.

Thank you, fivetonine. Glad you're here.

How's that?

(Couldn't help myself. We New Yorkers like to cut to the chase.)

Default Great idea

As I was saying to 2 of my friends over coffee tonight rehashing the election (1 voted for Street, 1 for Katz [and he is bitter]), many of us are caught up in the animosity of the election and forgetting why we love this City. It's the beauty, convenience, history, and especially the community spirit (as shown by this awesome and growing virtual community created on PhillyBlog.com) We must put aside our differences, pull ourselves together and work for a better Philadelphia with the resources we have at hand, our Philadelphia pride and the vision of a better day ahead.

I think a great (fun) organization to get involved with and that has been mentioned on this site before is http://www.gophila.com/friends/, Philly Friends is an energetic group of ambassadors for the region and will turn our passion for this region into positive and meaningful action by taking every opportunity to promote the area where we live, work and play. This in turn could attract tourists, new neighbors and even businesses to the City of Brotherly/Sisterly Love. Now come join me, put on your "rose colored" glasses again and meet me at the Blue Cross River Rink for
their orientation meeting on 11/24.
