I notice that, even as Street was sweeping to victory on the strength of his having cracked down on crime, there were two high-profile fatal shootings - one at Penn's Landing (a little more than 24 hours after I walked there with my 3-year-old daughter) and one in West Philly, in a largely African-American neighborhood where, if the media are to be believed, a majority probalby voted for Street.
Safe Streets indeed. |

only thing that drove street to victory was when he divided this city with racist and partisan remarks. and for the fact that he won by striking fear of bush/ashcroft into the hearts of his citizens, effectively making it a street vs. bush race
this mayor has done nothing but split this city in halves and quarters ever since he was elected to political office philadelphia lost out on a great opportunity with a visionist that could help move it into the 21st century, and be sure an environment is created where businesses want to come and where businesses want to stay. effectively, has the plans worked, our economy stood to gain many benefits that would by far outweigh the risks. the citizens are the losers here, and they've voted themselves that way there was nothing good about this election with a mayor who divided the city - these divisions will drive a deep wedge down between us for a LONG time to come the only solace we have is that it is now john street's responsibility to hold this city together, fix the painful wounds he started a month ago, make an environment that businesses want to come/stay, and will probably have his name tarnished even further as the real decline of this City can be traced back to him. god help us - because our citizens sure aren't and john street won't (other than his crownies and $friends$ and bruthus and sistas)

I blame Street, and I blame the Democrats. They were so desperate to hold onto power they were willing to resort to whatever worked, no matter how much it degraded the democratic (small d) process. Threats? You got it. Thugs at Katz events? You got it. Baseless paranoid conspiracy stories? You got it.
Let's set this part of the record straight right now - Katz took the high road from day one to the last day. He NEVER resorted to the kind of nonsense that Street & his cronies did. I know, there are accusations of this & that out there, not a one of them substantiated. All you had to do was compare their respective TV ads in the last days of the campaign. Katz was still trying to sound a theme of unity, still trying to inspire people by talking about a positive future. Street's campaign ads were almost exclusively negative. Katz ran a good campaign and didn't do the dirty things he might have tried to win. I respect the man for that. But let's not just shrug our shoulders and say, "oh well, that's just how politics is." That's Street-style defeatism. Katz showed us there could be another way. He also demonstrated just how hard it is to get a real message through all the static, & how hard it is to win running a clean campaign. |

I'm convinced that the stranglehold the Democrat party has on this city will never be broken. What really worries me is ... who comes after Street? Janie Blackwell? OMG. Anybody know a good realtor?

The incident at Penn's Landing was a federal drug bust and the only fatality was the suspect, after he had shot a DEA agent. So, A) it sounds like the incident didn't originally involve the city, so how is it Street's fault and B) no bystanders or officers were killed and only the one officer was injured and the last I heard, he'll be okay. It sounds to me like the entire situation was handled as well as it could, so why try turning it into a negative? Like I said, if you want to be upset about the election results, I have no problem with that. Just don't make things up so that it either softens the blow of the loss or makes people second guess things, because then you just sound like a sore loser. |

I'm very saddened by this outcome. Throughout the campaign, and watching the strong support for Street, I have had this overwhelming feeling of being a stranger in my own city...I'm not a "brother or sister" running the place, I'm not in a union, I don't have friends in my pocket to hook me up with a job or anything else. I'm just a 20 something who would love to stay in the city but works in the burbs...and is feeling increasingly out of place in a city that has become Street's playground.
