Default City Council DROP count increases

Council members Jack Kelly and Donna Reed Miller have joined five of their colleagues in the city’s deferred retirement option plan

legislation by Councilman Bill Green to bar public officials — his senior colleagues would be grandfathered — has gone nowhere
We are up to 7 Council members, out of 17, that have taken DROP.

Also, does it seem like Nutter is reluctant to take on City Council? The reform stuff he has done has been directly under his control, but anything that requires Council votes, has been shelved, hasn't it?

Other Council members in the program are Council President Anna C. Verna, Majority Leader Marian B. Tasco, Frank DiCicco and Frank Rizzo. It’s not clear whether all will retire or seek reelection in 2011.

I don't see how this law still exists. Maybe this can be an election issue like the pay raises for the legislatures and judges were.

This should be inserted into the Home Rule Charter in Chapter Four Term of Office and be Section 3-405 Title City Council Members (District and At-Large)

The Elected Office of City Council shall serve for a term of four years beginning on the first Monday of January following his/her election. He/she shall not be eligible for election for more than four successive terms; and he/she shall not during his/her term of office be a candidate for any other elective office whatsoever. Should he/she announce his/her candidacy for any other office, he/she shall be automatically disqualified to continue to serve as an elected Member of City Council, and the office shall be deemed vacant. And a Special Election held to fill that Office within one year.

Pretty much.

Nutter, as a Councilman, was against elected officials being part of it.

The legislation was in committee. Nutter got elected and changed position and said "it needs to be reviewed" and it was never voted on.

As for a campaign issue, sadly it was last year because Krajewski and Tartaglione were doing the "retire, bail out, and become elected" routine. Not enough people cared.

We can save a lot of time if we just copy and paste this into every thread about misfeasance, malfeasance and nonfeasance in City Hall.

How about a signature campaign urging a bill forcing every elected official who opts into DROP to actually retire and not pull a Krajewski - with no "grandfathering"?

If given enough rope City Council will find a way to hang itself on its own avarice and stupidity every time.

I do also actually agree with gop33 that 4 terms of 4 - 16 years total - is a reasonable term limit for City Council.

But they still get re-elected.

Or they get moved over to one of those 100K-a-year "advocate" jobs the voters so conveniently created for them.
