Default why are developers afraid to come to philadelphia?

bbs thread from the mayorsfourm2003.com bulletin board ,topic header: economic development

Philly needs to throw money into upgrading the city infrastructure and create new jobs:
-New streets, new lights, new signs,,new construction and service jobs.
-Less ticketing and more trash pick up, more tourism, more events to attract tourists, more hospitality jobs.
-More development on the waterfront, north philly, west philly ,south philly, ne philly, more jobs.

I agree on the speta stinks sentiment- will somebody please kick septa's board members in the collective ass. They receive city subsidies, state money , 15 million dollar penndot hand outs, and they are still the most expensive public transportation sytem in the country and get this, septa is still short on their budget for next year by almost 30 million dollars.

please will somebody find a more efficient and more environmentally friendly transportation system to come and save philly from the evil septa doers.

So you don't think that Inepta's union has anything to do with these problems? It's been said that SEPTA would need to get rid of half their employees to function properly. Maybe if management wasn't dealing with thousands of unnesessary workers in an obnoxious union, they'd have more money and more ability to actually plan. Once again, the union is suffocating the organzation that it is a part of.

Personally, I was quite annoyed with the Sam Katz ad in which the black woman at the end proclaims that the “brother” she is voting for is Sam Katz. I find it hypocritical that while the ad talked about how race is so unimportant when deciding whom to vote for in this race, the entire time there are scenes of Sam Katz surrounded by black people – and only black people – talking to kids, shaking their hands, etc. If race is so unimportant, why make an ad somehow attempting to prove how down Katz is with the black population, especially by having that woman characterize him as a “brother”?

Why is it that brother is a black thing? As a mason, I have millions of brothers all over the world.

Katz had to address it. Street is making it an issue. That and the Democrat thing. Street is pushing both. Vote Dem if you're a Dem and if you're a brother or a sister, stick with the brother already in office. Should he not address these things?

Katz' only other choice would be to ignore blacks, which he unfortunately did last time. Street and many other Democrats already ignore blacks, and take their votes for granted, so maybe if Katz get elected, he'll have blacks to thank, and he'll actually do more than just tow cars off the streets and put a few more police officers on corners.

Well, let’s correct the spelling (my fault). “Brotha” refers to black men. “Brother” can refer to anybody. The woman in the ad was definitely referring to the “brotha” she planned to vote for.

If it was true that race didn’t matter, then the ad would have been better off displaying lots of different people shaking Katz’s hand. But Katz knows as well as Street does that race DOES matter. Street doesn’t need to make an issue of the fact that he’s black – it’s written all over his face. Elections all over the country show white people being more likely to vote for white people and black people doing the same. This happens most likely b/c people feel like those who look like them share similar experiences and therefore will serve them better. Sam Katz is not “addressing” it, but simply trying to counteract what happens naturally. You don't see Street telling all the 75% of white folks who voted for Katz in the last election to ignore the color of Katz's skin.

This is the reason I’m NOT voting for Sam Katz. In four years, he suddenly develops this concern for the black voters of Philadelphia? Where was it four years ago? No matter how many ads with his shaking a black woman’s hand, or one woman declaring that Sam Katz is now a “brotha,” will make me feel like Sam Katz truly gives a rat’s arse about black people in this city. I do believe that until you’ve truly walked a mile in someone else’s shoes that you know what goes on in their lives and what can make it better. What the hell does Sam Katz know about the average black person in this city? And furthermore, outside of his campaign activities, what has he done to show he cares?

The people who would be offended by this ad, probably wouldn't vote for Katz anyway. No loss there. I doubt he'll lose any votes because of this ad.

Indigo

You're contradicting yourself. First you say he shouldn't have talked about race then you say you won't vote for him because last time he didn't talk about race. Which is it? Should he specifically target blacks or not? He seems to me he won't get your vote either way.
