For those [2, at the time of this post] people who said they would vote for Street, what are your reasons?

From an email that has been sent out to registered Republicans in the areaThanks to Brian for sending this to me  )

Quote:
Our 2003 Mayoral campaign has begun with more excitement and momentum than I could ever hope for!

I can report that we have raised over $2 million in our first two weeks.

The Philadelphia Inquirer headlined the story, "Katz's Donations Rivaling Street’s", and reported:

"The first returns in the 2003 Mayoral race are in, and it appears to be a tight contest between Mayor Street and Republican challenger Sam Katz."

- Philadelphia Inquirer 2/3/03

Under the headline, "Katz's Mayoral War Chest Now Tops $2m," the Philadelphia Daily News reported:

"Republican mayoral candidate Sam Katz has already raised more than $2 million for his quest to unseat Mayor Street, quickly pulling nearly even with the Democratic incumbent
in the money race."

- Philadelphia Daily News 2/3/03

We are assembling staff, setting up a campaign HQ, and I will be formally announcing my candidacy in the next several weeks.

I am committed to uniting and mobilizing the most diverse and broad-based coalition that Philadelphia has ever seen. So far, over 500 people have volunteered to help, representing every neighborhood, ethnic group and political party. We welcome everyone in the City to join us. As a leader and active member of the Philadelphia community, you understand the challenges that face this City. Together, as one team, one Philadelphia, we can restore the momentum we once had.

Campaign HQ is at the United Plaza Building, Suite 1610, 30 South 17th Street (between Chestnut and Market Streets), 215-SAM-2003. We want you to know our door is always open to you.

Please feel free to forward this to your friends and associates.

Sincerely,

Sam Katz

Maybe we can get some of their folks to check out the blog and post some of his views here on the topics we bring up regularly.

Is there anyone that is a volunteer in his campaign on the blog?

Just giving this thread a bump up, hoping some of the Katz / street supporters on here may see it.

Default Street officially confirms his bid for re-election

Not that anyone was wondering but...

Quote:
The race for mayor in Philadelphia is now in full swing as John Street formally launched his bid for re-election with an announcement at Philadelphia Community College.

The opponents will be the same as in 1999 - Democrat John Street versus Republican Sam Katz.

Randall Miller, political analyst at St. Joseph's University, says the race will be very different, simply because Street now carries the title "mayor": "Incumbents invariably win in Philadelphia. They have enormous resources to make them look good or better."

Still, Miller says, even as the incumbent, it won't be a cakewalk for Street: "It was a close race last time and Mr. Street has not been what I would call a popular mayor with everyone - although I do think polls are probably misrepresenting how much support he does have in the neighborhoods."

Miller believes that Street will campaign heavily on his work in the neighborhoods, with Operation Safe Streets and his anti-blight Neighborhood Transformation Initiative.
