I recently "had a little talk" with my satellite provider. I "strong-armed" them with competitors' sweet offers, along with their own offers to new customers. I basically told them to 'come up with your absolute best deal then do a little better or I am canceling and switching tomorrow.'
Eventually after them offering me a few peanuts and me laughing in their face, they gave me one of these "we don't do this for just ANYBODY but since you've been such a loyal customer we'll do it for you" spiels then transferred me to one of their customer care 'specialists.' Armed with the competitor offers (which were less than HALF of what I was paying for FEWER channels), I made them an offer they couldn't refuse... Match (and hopefully beat) these offers and throw in a little extra for my trouble or I walk... By the end of the call, they had: -given me a full one-month credit off my bill -reduced my monthly fee by almost $50 -thrown in ALL the movie channels for six months for the price of the basic package -plus a free DVR unit with no installation charge Smart companies take care of loyal customers, and if they know you are ready to walk, they will give you some pretty SWEET deals if you threaten to switch to a competitor. I do this with: -tv service every 1-2 yrs -internet -cell phones around the time the contracts are almost up -when I shop for cars (i.e. play one dealer's offers against the other, etc)... They say 'uncle' and deal every time if they know a) you are serious b) you are a good loyal customer and c) in the case of a car- if you have the financing approved and/or money down, and let them know you are ready to move on the right offer... Don't pay more than you have to pay - be an informed and proactive customer... your loyal business over time is worth more to them than losing it over the extra bucks they gouge the other louts who roll over and pony up whatever is on the bill every single time without making them do better every once in a while.
