Default Dumping my home phone

I really want to dump my home phone, but I need it for my DSL. I have been researching, however it is not cheap as I thought.

I spoke with Verizon and I was told that it would cost more to have DSL/internet without a home phone.

I don't use my home phone 95% of the time and I find that it is just a waste of $$$$. I can be using that $$$$ for the gas. I put 50 buck in my car today. Elliminating my phone service would help.

Can someone assist me with a least expensive internet alternative? I currently have a desktop and a laptop. The laptop is wireless.

Thanks

First, look into Naked DSL -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_DSL
Second, I know Speakeasy offers this in the Philly area. I used it before moving to FIOS. Check them out -- http://www.speakeasy.net/home/onelink/

Why not switch to Comcast? I have Comcast for internet only and own my cable modem. I pay just under $60/mo. Speed over cable in general is faster than DSL. and if you subscribe to cable TV, then the package price for internet service is around $45/mo.

Onelink wants $56/mo (and I'm not sure if that includes taxes). That's probably around what Verizon would charge for naked DSL.

speakeasy is pretty expensive from what i recall, but it's worth checking out how much it would cost you.

i believe verizon dsl (lowest tier) + phone is about $30-35/mo. So Comcast obviously isn't an alternative if they're looking for something cheaper.

even if FiOS is available, it's still going to be more expensive than dsl+phone line.

not sure what options you have left for cheap broadband.

I pay about $28 per month for my DSL ... without a phone line. I think that's the lower speed but still cheaper than comcast.

Is your DSL from Verizon? I know other companies have DSL.

At one time they claimed they were no longer accepting new customers, but Verizon DOES in fact offer what they call, "NAKED DSL" - that's DSL without phone service & I've been with them for just over 2 years. I have 3.0 Gig service for around $40 a month. They recently offered to bundle my wireless(900 minute)/DSL service for a bit over $80/month.

While some on this board did say they were not able to get the service a year or so ago, it's worth calling to inquire.

Actually, I just checked the service options for my old CC address on their website and received,

"Internet + Wireless Bundle
No Home Phone Service needed!
Starting at $69.99/mo"

That is way too much. Verizon Dry Loop as it is called is less than that. Also the modem doubles as a wireless router so that wireless bundle is really free. Comcast charges A LOT if you want a router through them.

Cavalier charges about $45 for a dry loop access (and about $5 more for a full package so there isn't much difference). They do rely on Verizon's infrastructure, though.

As for Comcast, I've been rather dissatisfied with their cable internet. Frequent outages that took forever to fix...
