EarthLink to pull the plug on its WiFi project in Philadelphia

Philadelphia's citywide wireless network appears headed for the scrap heap.

Earthlink Inc., which built and maintains the system, announced today that it would end service on June 12, after a deal collapsed that would have transferred ownership of the network to an Ohio-based non-profit called OneCommunity.

Mayor Nutter said he was "disappointed" by Earthlink's decision, and he signaled that the city intended to hold the company to at least some of the financial commitments it made contractual commitments.

But it was clear the mayor did not think it was likely another operator would be found to run the system.

"The business model was tenous at best," Nutter said. "I think what we have here is a market going in a different direction."

Does anyone know if there has been a profitable business model for a similar service anywhere in the U.S.?

It's disappointing that earthlink bit off more than it can chew. I remember when the idea was announced how exciting and fresh it was. Being an internet geek I had hopes of busting out a laptop anywhere in the city and getting a good signal haha. WiFi is such a common thing in homes these days that I really had high expectations that this wirelessphilly project was going to be successful. If only they could figure out a way to make the recievers more powerful for the home user. After all we have cell towers that transmit to the tiniest of phones. There has to be away to send large data in a similar fashion (at some point)

The ones that are alive actually provide a service within the city that are paid for with long term contracts (things like meter reading). Basically, they need an anchor tenent to make sense. I don't recall offhand any of the cities that worked this way.
