I also purchased the one-year warranty from the Camera Shop, which includes full repair or total replacement under any circumstances, even "abnormal use." Heh.

TCS threw in a nice carrying bag, and 18 tickets good for the photography classes they offer in-store, which I will absolutely need in order to understand how the heck to work this thing!

Total came to just under $800. I almost passed out while forking over my credit card. For god's sake, my WEDDING GOWN cost less than this!!!

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm charging the battery as I type and I can hardly wait to play!!!
Congratulations !

The VR lens help a lot for handheld shots. Don't worry about something going wrong, I still use my D70 that's over three years old and has over 14,000 photos taken with it.

Should have gone to B&H Photo the best camera store on the planet!

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...al_Camera.html
d40 with 18-55mm lens kit - $474.95

or

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...al_Camera.html
d40 with 18-135mm kit - $659.95

both of the above come with free overnight shipping.

I would have suggested earlier but just came across your thread.

there really isn't a brick and mortar store around that can beat the quality or price of B+H.....I've looked everywhere. I'm in the market myself for a new DSLR and was walking by Ritz camera and noticed a big sale sign on the canon 400d. so i went in to check it out......there Christmas newly reduced sale price was still $65 more then the regular price at B+H. You can pick up a 4GB SD Card from Newegg.com for $65. so with the difference saved you can buy a sweet memory card.

I still use a D100, I think Nikon's first "prosumer" DSLR after launching their D1 line. While the newest of their models such as the D200 and D300 could cause us to lust over the hardware, I'm fully satisfied with my "old" camera. Someday maybe I'll pick up one with more megapixels and less noise, but I find no need for it now.

Congrads! That is a great starter kit and the VR lens will help a lot. I shoot professionally for a living and can only say it is a great way to earn your salary!!! Once you use a DSLR you won't miss a point & shoot. I have only played with a D40 once @ a Nikon Event but it took amazing images from what I could tell. (I use the D80 & D200 as well as a old D70s for taking around everywhere when not working)

Have fun!
