Default North Philly & Strawberry Mansion - Part One

Rather than stay home and watch the Steelers annihilate The Eagles, I spent that Sunday afternoon in North Philly checking out the incredible housing stock up there.

Take a look.

Church Of The Gesu.

There are disturbing amounts of this scattered all over North Philadelphia.

Philly? The 'hood? Murals? Of course!

"Just gimme the lots..."

Call 'em what you want but don't call 'em apolitical.

North Broad Street was one of the city's most fashionable addresses in the early 20th Century. Mansions lined the street for miles. Some still survive...

...with their details.

Temple University's Hardwick Hall dormitory. We'll skip Temple for now.

Never seen this before.

MMMM...grits.

Diamond Street in particular holds some of the finest architecture in the city, period. The housing stock is second to none (would help if it was occupied) and you're about to see what blew me away...

The Church Of The Advocate. Incroyable. I haven't seen flying buttresses like this on any church in town.

More diamonds in the rough in Volume Two...

Really cool pics. The second one, is that the view from the Temple train station?

No, I didn't get that far east this time around. The first few were taken around 22nd & Corinthian, moe or less the area between 24th & 20th and Fairmount Avenue and Poplar Street.

Diamond St West of Temple definitely has some of the most impressive architecture I've seen in the city. A lot is abandoned but I recall some of the houses close to Broad being turned into apartments earlier this year. I believe there's also an old city ordinance that forbids building any bars on Diamond St. Probably dates back to when that was millionaire's row.

Not a whole lot worth seeing East of Temple, though (in "the Badlands"). The older architecture is mostly like what you'd see in Northern Liberties and about half of what's there is now new housing (PHA, for the most part). They just cleared out another couple city blocks between Oxford and Jefferson -- around 7th St or so -- so I suspect more PHA stuff's on the way.

Here's the view to the East from Tempe's RR station:

Wonderful pictures - of areas we seldom see.

What is the huge Church structure in one of the early pictures?

Went back and re-checked. Church of the Gesu.

Great pics. The second one down of the pink and red townhouse is the absolutely quintessential North Philly image. If it were West Philly I would take it as my avatar.
