I'm fascinated by that graffiti building behind the Shell station, moreso than the Shell ethanol mural...I'm told the graphic boxcar piece is based on an actual suicide of a Philly kid.

When I see that building, I see a part of the city that most people prefer to remain hidden - expressions of disaffection, of identity seeking, of the illicit thrills of youth. One scholar in the early days of modern graffiti called it the ephemeral mastery and occupation of space. It is not only a way to take what is not yours, but what you cannot or are not allowed to have. And all the marks fade and pass, and it represents for me something about all our lives, our efforts to make our marks. They all fade and pass. That building will be gone in time and you will have another bland condo or whatever. But I relish its defiance while it stands.
