Default Mystery fruit / seed pod

Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lblanchard/1660147532/

Yesterday Mr. lbphilly and I took a walk along the Delaware River out behind the airport. At high water mark we saw a lot of fleshy seeds, somewhat larger than corn kernels, looking a bit like giant green pomegranate seeds. Eventually we found a fruit or seedpod as well as the seeds. It's pictured here.

I've never seen anything like it before. I suppose it could be some exotic foodstuff, spilled from a container ship. Anyone have any idea what it is?

Photo is larger than life-sized.

That's a neat place to go to do some exploring. I found that place a few years ago and some folks treated it almost like they were down at Wildwood or Cape May on the beach.

Don't know what that fruit or whatever it is, is. Just doesn't look like something I'd take a chance on eating.

Its green arrow arum seeds, which is dying off due to the time of year. As it dies, it leaves the pods that you photographed.

Here's what it looks like before it dies off-its generally found next to riverbanks and wetlands.

That would be the one. Now that I think about it, I bet the bed of green stuff a little north of where I found this is a stand of the stuff.

Yeah, and behind it is probably pickerelweed-they usually grow near each other.

Down south in Louisiana we call them Maypops...they have quite a tangy taste. But I love them!
I think I might be speaking of a different fruit!

How do you get out to there? Like you're going to the UPS?
