I didn't say anything when I saw this but now I'll chime in. I don't think this photo is "strange". To me it's an image of a woman living the best that she can. This woman certainly has a story to tell and I think the photographer had a responsibility to give this person that opportunity rather than just photo.

This photo needs a little more pathos. It's like a clinical observation through a window but there's no connection between the person taking the photo and the subject. Even at a clinic the subject would get a diagnosis and there would be a certain rapport.

Hope not dope, god is good.. hehe

Thanks, Colin, I felt the same as you about this. Maybe it is the nurse in me, but everyone has a story to tell, and this picture is almost nothing more than a cheap shot at her; if the subject was looking at the camera, we would know more about her.

In my mind, it is one thing to be out in public living your life, knowing that you are going to be seen by many people, and quite anoher thing to have your image bandied about by people who are not sharing any part of that life with you. I dunno. Seems almost a violation of her privacy.

I do admire many of Mr. Sasso's pictures, esp of buildings etc. He's got a unique eye for gorgeousness in geometry.

Well...he's looking for something, that much is obvious. He's engaged in the world, whereas the lady in the first pic is reading her book - a private activity.

I can't say why I think that there is a difference, but something about their stance seems very different to me; I like the pic of the elderly gentleman (I've got a soft spot for old men, could talk to them all day). I can't imagine, tho, how he wasn't aware that you were taking his photo; it's an odd (but effective) angle.

Taking a picture of someone without their knowledge seems invasive to me, esp. now that it is so easy to send their image throughout the world.

Or maybe I am blathering.

He talked at me for about half an hour as we walked slowly from the main library to the corner of 19th and Chestnut. I could hardly get a word in and was carrying my camera along the way.

I shot that 'from the hip.' The camera was at my side.

I love Zoe Strauss's portraits. The subjects are almost in every case aware that they're being photographed and engaged directly with the camera/photographer.

At the same time I love Walker Evans, who went to extremes to take candid photos. He'd hide his camera in his coat or use a specially constructed lens that shot at a 90 degree angle to the direction he appeared to be pointing it.
