Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Augustus von Steuben trained and otherwise assisted The American forces during the Revolutionary War...it is in his honor that the parade is named. It is a parade held by German-Americans every year.

My daughters learned about him in their 3rd grade history lessons (we homeschool)...just as they learned about their not-so-illustrious paternal ancestor who served as a Hessian soldier at the Battle of Trenton (and whose troops were so drunk that they were beaten badly. He later defected to the American side, lol!)

montrose -The Von Steuben Parade used to be downtown (Broad St?) but for the last 4 years it's been happening along Frankford Ave in Holmesburg/Mayfair from Welsh to Cottman. 3rd Saturday in Sept?

fiherparkkid - The filter used for these shots is an infrared-pass filter. A popular one is the hoya r72. Digicams are generally not very sensitve to ir light - by design. Manufacturers place a stong internal ir blocker over the sensor to help with in-camera processing. The camera used here was a converted fuji f20. The internal ir blocker was removed and replaced with an ir-pass filter similar to the hoya r72. Factory refurb f20 on the internet for ~$100. Conversion $200 at maxmax.com in north Jersey.

Oh darn it, I missed it!

I have always wanted to see this parade. I think it is the one that has the crossing of the ducks on Broad St.

But I guess there is no crossing of the ducks anymore since it isn't on Broad???

I'm sad I missed this.
