I'm surprised there hasn't been much commentary on this project recently, given the progress that's being made. I'm looking forward to seeing this baby go up.

So...perhaps someone who knows skyscraper construction better than I can confirm or rebutt this, but I'm guessing that the large concrete thing they're working on currently is the elevator shaft that will make up the core of the building, and that they will then do an open space around it, framed out in steel or some such material and sheathed in glass. How's that for a guess?

I actually heard that, in order to allay 9/11 related concerns, the building is going to have a solid concrete core that'll supposedly hold up in a fire like the one at the WTC and provide refuge for the building's occupants until help arrives. That's what I've been assuming the current structure is.

Concrete core structures have been built since before 9/11. One Liberty Place uses a concrete core. The concrete core contains the stairwells for emergency egress.

The concrete core will house the elevators, stairwells, and the mechanical chases for running plumbing, HVAC, electric, communcation lines, etc.

The steel structure will be built around it.

Does anyone remember when One Liberty Place went up?

I'm guess not many do, which is why the next 18 months are going to be a real treat to watch something go way way up in the sky in the middle of the city.

I do very well. Liberty II is the one the concrete core. Liberty I uses the more traditional construction. The core of Liberty II went up much faster than the steel girders that surround it.
